Didn't really know his work, and yet I knew he was a huge force both in the neighborhood and the alt literary circles. Our paths rarely met either, yet I know so many who were inspired by him.

Those rare ones (like Jim Carroll) who become true poet cult heroes - Byron, Patti Smith et al - are SO valuable. Without these "rock stars", poetry might be a dying form. With them, its reborn every few generations.
