Going to be a great theme for 2011! I think Jon Stiers sent you a line about possibly performing - he rocks. Looking forward to see him entrancing the crowd with his voice and piano skills. Can we get Brook Alyson's butt here this year?

Hey Bobby, Don't know what our summer is like yet. We have so many things up in the air right now but we really want to get there sometime in June. Captain Jack's of course. Gennaro is torturing. He wants more landscaping around his grave. He is no longer satisfied with the flower treatment. He now wants trees & shrubs! So if you see him at "Bar Rush" tell him I'm on it. Legendary birthday by the way. Everyone is still talking about it. AND LOOK OUT! Last night at Cheezwhiz Miss...

" I guess for me, my freedom to live as I please was a higher priority than it is for some. " That may be it in a nutshell, Miss Understood. Sometimes the desire may be growing and latent and its a matter of timing. I remember what a quiet, shy kid I was until in 8th grade, the boy behind me in class would not leave me alone. He was always whispering funny things to me and singing songs to me really low until he finally won me over and in a big way. Suddenly I was transformed, which really...

OMG. We laughed. We cried. It was better than Cats. Seriously, how inspiring, and discouraging at the same time. They had all the right ideas in '68 - '71... too bad it couldn't have remained pure. We want to go to the alternate universe where the flower children were successful in changing the world. There are 9 extra scenes on the DVD, so those of you who saw it in the theater should revisit it XXXOOO Satori

I had a friend who was Vietnamese(sp?)who, before kissing me on the check "hello" she would gently grab my face rub her cheek against mine then take a deep breath to sniff me - literally like one would a flower, I thought it was very flattering and charming (and something of a turn-on but, with "westerners" what is'nt? ha, ha.. ). In her culture this is how you greeted someone you loved, a beloved friend, family ect. Very sweet indeed. I miss her..... Gi-Gi p.s. I know you're the Queen of...

In Locarno now Empress, not too distant from Bosnia, in fact a lot of smuggling, money laundering and cigarrettes mostly but some illegal aliens too, come and go through here from Bosnia. The last time I was here I spent one evening in a mountain hut at 10,000 feet with three veteran Albanian border piercers who proceeded to drink nearly all their contraband while cheating eachother blind at cards all night. One nice ammenity about Locarno though are the numerous corner smoke shops, and it...

Back in Athens for a final night before flying home. Now that the Easter holidays are over the city is decidedly more crowded and busy. This time we walked through some neighborhoods and back streets that are quite lovely. It was good to see this prettier side of the city. Also nice to roam around without any agenda. Our hotel gave us a gorgeous room on the top floor with a gigantic flower-covered terrace and a better view of the Acropolis than we had on our previous two nights. We plan on a...

I see this situation/problem as much more complex. Remember, the U.S. is a non-socialist society with no real safety nets and our politicians are constantly working hard to gut and destroy what few we have (welfare, Social Security, public education, etc). Unlike in Europe, people here pretty much have to fend for themselves and cannot rely on the government to bail them out in the event of personal economic disaster. (In Germany for example, unemployment is a huge issue because many people...

Very interesting article Stanley. Of course it's nothing new to anyone on the Motherboards but it's great that someone else is saying it too. And yes, the famous 6th Avenue Flea Market is gone. It has moved to 39th and (I think) 11th Avenue. Hell's Kitchen. But don't despair, they are going to replace it with something we REALLY need... An ugly 30 story high rise with $4,000.00 a month studio apartments. They will be 300 square foot "luxury apartments" with 7 foot ceilings, cardboard walls...

I've just been reading all of the entries here, and I find some comfort in the laments herein, knowing that at least we all see what is happening. It's true that it's happening all over but that doesn't make New York any less heartbreaking. It seems to me that the tearing down of everything that is old, small, full of character, and the replacing of them all with those big ugly bland expensive buildings has reached a frenzy. Yesterday I took a big walk and saw it everywhere, on 18th and 8th...

All these old NYC landmarks are all being moved out or pushed out by these ugly, monstrosities called luxury condominuims! Who can afford living here anymore? The new yuppies and rich Europeans? AGH! These NYC tour opperators will have less and less to show to the tourists as these new residential buildings will take over and Manhattan will be nothing more than a grey city with no personality. It was always nice to know that you could always go down to Fulton to buy fresh fish; the flower...

THE FLOWER DISTRICT IS LEAVING? Every day I was over there getting roses , 2 dozen for $15. at the end of the day. ALL THESE POOR PEOPLE.... the little flea marketers, the rose sellers, the plant people... WHERE ARE THEY GOING? I feel sick. Bobby, at this moment it seems nothing can drown out the hideous drumbeat of the Money Grubbers. To refuse to live for money or profit seems the only possible philosophy.

I walked up and down West 28th today and looked at all the little old buildings. Most are two and three storeys, and in pretty bad condition from years of neglect, just being used for the flower-merchants. You see water damage everywhere.. Most are very cute, sweet old places with the old paint still on them, funny rickety old wood windows...the wrecker's ball trembling above their heads. I had looked at space on West 27th facing North, and the views from those lofts are stupendous because...

Hey, the Fulton Fish market is going to Hunts Point so who knows where the flower people on 28th will end up. As for the article S'tan posted about the culture and arts sector of NYC, it is still something that is only looked at on the macro scale by Puff Puff Bloomberg and city government. They will give all sorts of financial and code considerations to things like the Met and the Guggy and Lincoln Center but are totally blind as to where the artists come from who end up having their work...

Lightening, I think, is the state flower. When I was there last September I was caught on a 7,000 foot elevation ridge in one of those storms. Spent one hour running down it with lightening exploding the mesquite on either side of me. I was hoping it didn't have a taste for the electrically charged video cam in my pack. Devilland. And I laughed with that just-escaped-death-again exhaustion at the bottom of the ridge. I think that lightening just likes being close to the spark in your heart ...

You can find some of my favorite poetry of Manley P Hall in " Collected Writings of Manley P .Hall, Volume 3 Essays and Poems." A sample: " Masks " Some come to laugh; others come to cry. Some aspire. The most, like cattle, follow herdsman and their barking curs. Some come to love; others to be loved. Some come to walk the weary way alone; while many mingle with an endless throng. Some come to pray; others to labor. Some, more fortunate, walk life's way in ease. While others struggle broken...

This trip has definitely been more business than "vacation" though I still love everything about this nutty place. I am dealing with about 10 different shops, most existing in this very unassuming maze-like marketplace. It's completely unhip and untrendy, totally away from most tourist traffic. Yet, they have a certain specific international following of queens, trannies, and other show people who come to get costumes, wardrobe shows, etc. Perfidia and I notice little trends in what's going...
