Re: Hurricane Irene on the Motherboards NYC

Seems the wind action here on the Westside was minimal; I have seen many pics of broken trees in the EV and Tompkins Square Park. Now the issue of flooding and tidal surges remains for this neighborhood. I look out the window and see joggers. Nothing will stop them, apparently. I can also see about 3 feet of water on (the now closed?) Don Hill's roof. Not good. Somebody should have cleaned out those drains! In this area the sea wall by the river is new and sturdy. Down at BPC and over in the...

There was a followup story on NY1 tonight saying that residents and businesses in the affected area - which was huge - West Side from Battery Park to 14th Street West of Broadway - are being asked to conserve power with the new heat wave coming this week. It seems that power for that sector that was controlled by the blown-up transformer has to be coming from somewhere else for a few weeks while it is rebuilt. And they don't sound that confident about the somewhere else. If you didn't lose...

I agree that M2M (or as Flloyd and I like to call it, F2M) is a step in the right direction for the NYU-infested 3rd ave. I'm a big fan of the Unagi which they have for very cheap. But overall I'm still partial to good old SUNRISE MART (it's on Stuyvesant Street just east of 3rd - take the elevator). Viva la japonaise! One thing I'd like to bring up here is the recent closing of many of our neighborhood markets and stores. BOTTOM LINE (10th & 1st) closed its doors this spring and I used...

As far as Japanese foods, I'm glad there is a place I can go now. I love making sushi!

Yes I definitely noticed it, Chi. About 2PM I was walking with my roommate in the EV and we both noticed 2 passenger planes flying really low. I'm sure the always-rotten NY1 will have coverage on it sometime later next month. I'm on the top floor of a 6-story building and can hear air traffic all the time. Today it's noisier than ever. Keep your eye on the skies!

Don't miss this interesting tale of two latter-day bohemians here on the LES. Its great because the author - the brilliant C. Carr - points out that the EV has been declared dead for bohos at least once every decade, yet its still the only place we all choose to live (despite all the boho enclaves discussed elsewhere and the incredible rents.) I really like Rev Jen and have worked and demonstrated with her several times with the Dance Liberation Front and Legalize Dancing NYC, but I think...

Wanted to put in a recommendation for all EV lovers/rememberers to read Tom Spanbauer's IN THE CITY OF SHY HUNTERS - it is set in the now-mythic early 80s EV and evokes the neighborhood better than any single thing Ive read. Since it came out ages ago, I'm assuming some of you have read it, but really worth it if you've not.

S'tan, please, the East Village 'art scene' was not about cashing in on the money? Let's not idealize it tooooooo much. Sorry to cast aspersions on many of your past and current aquaintances, but the EV 'art scene' was just the same catagory of ladder climbers Soho was ALL about. It's just that the EV 'scene' was the only space available on account of that olde arte world staple, exclusivity. Mark Kostabi is really the epitome of the East Village 'art scene' of the eighties. I'm not...

No of course if you are an artist you don't HAVE to make a living at it, but it would certainly be wonderful if we could. Seven you seem to think that is an impossibility, this is what irks me. I have to believe somewhere there is an editor who would not make me bow and scrape to get published. Wouldn't you? Artists who are purchased by the wealthy collectors are not necessarily making things to flatter their tastes. Artists do subsist in our culture as a parasitic entity, I grant you that,...

The "Only Money vs. Only No Money" thread here made me think of this... Odd that about 28 years ago I was having a very similar discussion one day in a loft on Mercer Street owned by a cocaine dealer friend of my brother's who had laundered his money by buying up a great deal of that neighborhood. Tom Wolfe's The Painted Word had come out the previous year and someone was playing a then-unreleased demo of a song by Joni Mitchell, composed as a response to Wolfe (The Boho Dance.) Naturally...

God Hatchie I wish I'd been supporting someone like David Wojnarowicz at the time. Thank you for the poignant tale of his making a mountain of gorge trash in swank digs. Me I was ensconced uptown with the Luddite classicist, painter Duncan Hannah who loathed the whole downtown scene and would go into rages over grafitti art. My easy-earned dominatrix dollars ("she's lording it over a hot slave tonight" Rene Ricard used to croak) went to fuelling this fantasy of a 'New Romantic' revolution.

Making a living off your writing should not be an impossibility for you, S'tan. Alls you need is to find an agent/editor who doesn't want YOU to be the sub in some Paris gallery performance! Between your and Hatches' input here it is like no one really needs to go to the museum show. S'tan, are you sure it was Proust? I think it was rather Flaubert who wrote Bouvard and Pecuchet, unless Flaubert stole it all. You're such a Francophille. Stomp on me for one more criticism of the EV 80's show.

I remember the 80's and the east village and the junkies and everyone mentioned but I had enough sense at the time to stay in the west village with the rest of the fags. Though I liked a lot of the art at the New Museum show it was not actually about the art. As much as I liked the kooky dancing bee video for its low-budget, tres gay, faux MTV production value, Klaus Noami's video (with sound so lamentably under-amped), the Jack Smith AMAZING 1962 film -the show is about the scene and the people and not really about the art at all! Not too subtle about that either, since the whole upstairs gallery is devoted to 'class' pictures and headshots of the...

Of course the EV Art Show is about the art. It can't be divorced from the scene it, the art, first and foremost created. It was not just a bunch of people drinking in bars, e.g do you think the "Meat Market Scene" will end up in a gallery? Did David W. live and die for your dismissals? Just because you don't like the art doesn't mean it is not a real force... we did not predict then how important it would be, and you can't predict now how influential it will continue to be.

This thread is not about the EV Art scene. It was trying to reflect on those aspects of New York we have seen depart: Farewell Charming Old New York. Sanctimonious attitude from those -- including myself -- who are not painters, deciding that some passionate artists are really only sell-outs, or even deciding they were perfect, whatever... what is the point? Do we really know eveything about who they were, and what they intended? Because Kostabi and Warhol were cynical money-lovers doesn't...

Hello Ann's Brother, Bill! Just the other day I was sitting in a parking lot in Fort Lauderdale and thinking of Ann and of writing a bit about her... Ann's involvement with the Pyramid predated my own, believe it or not. She was the regular host of Bobby Bradley's brainchild-- a Sunday night performance art event called "Cafe Iguana." Gracious, chatty, and personable, Ann's introductions often began in a rambling and disconnected manner, but somehow she managed, during the course of her...

Re: Hotels In NYC

I should think that the NOTS hotel page might be best, as everything you will want to go to will be Downtown. Anywhere south of Midtown would be a general location. There are some B&B's that are really cheap in the EV, but you will never be able to take anyone back to your room with you... so stick with the hotels-- you never know... you might get lucky! Never, never choose a hotel near an airport. Though their prices are cheaper, there is a good reason for that. They are miles away from...

Though I was never a real fan, the shop was kind of the gateway to Lafayette for years. When I first noticed its manifestation was when I used to visit a gallery a little further down the street run by Josh Baer as a kind of 'not EV but definitely not Soho' statement. Baer, whose mother was a famous minimalist painter and expat who relocated to Amsterdam years before, was plugged in to a high tier of art collectors. He showed Jack Goldstein, Nancy Dwyer, et. al. On a lighter note ..... I've really come to love taking my Napoleon to the dog run at Tompkins Square Park. It relaxes me and my "fag child" lives for it. Once in a while I take him to other runs like Union Square, Washington Square and Stuyvesant Square, but Tompkins is our favorite, the closest thing to having a back yard. Being a dog daddy has brought me into contact with so many people right here in the EV hood that I'd never have met otherwise, and it gives me such pleasure to watch my...
