That was hilarious, Miss Understood. I saw the film a couple of weeks ago. It was an embarrassment. The actors, especially Culkin, were awful (and word to whoever mentioned the "gay accent"--what the fuck?) Script was dumb, editing was annoying...it just sucked, mostly. But I did learn at least one thing--I'd no idea that James St. James was a trust fund baby, which goes some distance in explaining how people who do nothing for a living earn a living, especially in Manhattan.

I met Miss Ellis once years ago when I was temping at Random House around the time that American Psycho was first published. Pretty much the entire staff, especially the staff of Alfred A. Knopf, was in an uproar that senior management had dirtied the reputation of Random House and its imprints by agreeing to publish such poorly-written filth. Miss Ellis came to the office one day to meet with an editor, and shaking her hand felt squeezing a cold, dead fish. In my hierarchy of reading there...

Re: Goin' To The Chapel: The Lesbian, Gay & T/S Marriage Topic

This has turned into a gorgeous bit of civil disobedience! Can anyone tell me when a mayor, a city, and a county have done something like this before? Certainly, some Southern states & municipalities individually tried something similar regarding desegregation in the 1960s (and that was really a dispute between the Feds vs. the states,) but never all three at once, and in collusion. The ADF (Alliance Defense Fund) was simply asking the judge for an injunction against any further same-sex...

The situation outside San Francisco's City Hall escalates as gay marriage opponents begin passionate protests. San Francisco (which is both a city and a county) has now stepped up the battle with a lawsuit of its own against California state. What's fierce to me in all of this is how many of the local and even state officials, most of them heterosexual, are in favor of Mayor Newsom's decision. Even if all these gay marriages happening now are later invalidated, this historic event has begun...

Sorry if I am getting off the subject of rug munchin', butt blowing and Jenny bashing....I just wanted to thank Chi Chi, Jonny, and Hattie for, once again, throwing another fab. NOTS! I did miss a few performances due to being back stage too much (waiting to go on...)so that, plus the club being too hot, was my only complaint . I know the Knitting Factory is a well known venue but I miss the days of the smaller, more intimate crowds and venues. Oh well....if NOTS is getting too big and too...

The "Only Money vs. Only No Money" thread here made me think of this... Odd that about 28 years ago I was having a very similar discussion one day in a loft on Mercer Street owned by a cocaine dealer friend of my brother's who had laundered his money by buying up a great deal of that neighborhood. Tom Wolfe's The Painted Word had come out the previous year and someone was playing a then-unreleased demo of a song by Joni Mitchell, composed as a response to Wolfe (The Boho Dance.) Naturally...

What's wrong with my computer, I don't see an Anya picture? Hatches that was my no makeup look... I know what you mean about the migrations. E.g.. Duncan came to NY with about 10 friends and no, they didn't all live in the same apartment together, like you'd probably have to now. Everyone got their OWN place, but would hang out together. You did used to meet whole groups of artists/performers/writers, who from their home town decided en masse to move here together. This inspired those left...

Dear S'tan, I do not see a general apathy for concern about gender-based violence. There are thousands and thousands of private, community, non-gevernmental and governmental organizations around the globe, admittedly very small organizations, that have for many many decades combated the same conditions Ensler also opposes. So she did not invent her cause. She made it though a cause celebre. And of course she is very deserving of gratitude and support. What I see is a widespread complacency...

Yeah! First some back story on DJ Pickles... As most of you know, Pickles is my DJ Daughter. As a youngster Pickles worked for The Empress and I and was a big part of the day to day running of "Jackie 60", "Mother" and pretty much anything we did including the legendary "Grey Gardens". In fact, I named her "Sammy Jo" because he was without a doubt the "Heather Locklear" in our Dynasty family. You can imagine my shock to learn that Pickles had secret DJ dreams and my total amazement at how...

Let me interrupt here... I know what Pickles is trying to say. That he has been surprised by his good fortune etc. but the truth is it's probably never going to happen to you. There are more so-called "DJs" today than ever. EVERYONE is a DJ! Pickles is extremely talented and has been extremely lucky and works very hard but his life is the exception not the rule. Go into DJing with your eyes open! Unless you have a trust fund (and I know a lot of young DJs now do) this is a tough road.

Re: Dean Johnson - Death of a Legendary Legend

I've been very disturbed by all of this since my friend Roger DeGennaro, a Howl festival organizer, told me about Dean's death last night. So I must, like all of you, share my memories of Dean in order to ease the sadness I feel. I met Dean when he was doorman at the Boybar back in 1983. You couldn't NOT notice him, with that too-tall, lanky frame and basso profundo voice (he could have been the bastard son of Living Theater co-founder Julian Beck!)--not to mention his cutting wit and...
