Hey Everyone,
I am in the cast of the premier production of Tarell Alvin McCraney's "beautiful nightmare" WIG OUT! Previews begin Sept. 10th and officially opens Sept. 30th.

WIG OUT! takes you down the rabbit hole into a world where "Vogue" is the official language. Paris has burned and her ashes serve as fertile soil for a new breed of warrior fighting their way down the catwalk. With a battle cry that demands "Walk for Me",and armed with nothing but razor sharp tongues and dangerous moves, the children defend their houses and the mothers and fathers who loved them when the rest of the world wouldn't.

On Wednesday Oct 1, we are doing a special 9pm curtain and all of the major "Houses" have been invited with a red carpet and grand march before the play. Immediately after the play I am throwing a cast party for cast, crew and friends at Stonewall with a gorgeous show with many cast members and special guests performing. This night should be incredible.

To the fairest houses of them all...

My name is Tarell Alvin McCraney. I'm a 27 year-old playwright from Miami, FL. From my experiences in and around the drag house scene I created a play that explores that world in the live theater space. The cast is 11 strong and it's being directed by incredible artist Tina Landau at the Vineyard Theatre at 108 E. 15th St. Though fun and exciting, its fierce to chop kidz for acting the fool and praising them for coming correct in our rehearsals, still we know that this show is well, just rehearsal without an audience and the audience we most surely want to engage, entertain and be enlightened with are those legends stars statements and newcomers whom inspired all the magic that happens on our stage... YOU!

Now, this is top secret so tell EVERYBODY, on October 1st, to honor the Houses and all who have inspired WIG OUT! the Vineyard Theatre has designed a late night showing of WIG OUT! for the ball children called THE STUNT AND SHOW.
Though new to this, the Vineyard is trying to pull it by beginning a red carpet Grand March into the theater at 8 PM open to all houses attending and complete with photo ops. The play begins at 9 PM SHARP! This is a one night exclusive event. Seating is limited and late seating is chopped so you HAVE to be there for the march in.

We have set up a myspace page: (http://www. myspace. com/vineyardtheatrewigout) and a Facebook page that will alert you to info on the special event. We certainly hope you will join us and if you have any questions comments or just shouts you want heard please feel free to respond on our Myspace or Facebook pages. Hope to see you soon!

Respectfully yours,
Tarell Alvin McCraney

Happy election day! Spread the love!
Since we saw this show on Election Night, didnt have time to post until now. WIG OUT! was absolutely phenomenal - the entire ensemble acted, strutted, sung and danced their talented booties off! The staging was inspired - It integrated the ballhouse runway so cleverly, giving the entire show "realness" from the first moments.

Sweetie TURNED it - of course - as did the three "fates" that served as a Greek chorus and really all the players. I think with some original songs this show could go to Broadway and find a large audience, and fervently hope it does.

I know these tickets seem really expensive at the moment for some of us, but for a show that will stay with you for a long time AND brings this unique and local culture alive in brand new ways, its actually a bargain.

Wig Out is wonderful!
I was so impressed.
It was like seeing something really big right before it explodes.
ALL of the actors were amazing.
Who the hell cast this?
Everyone was perfection.
And the girls... THEY CAN ALL SING -DOWN!!!!!
The staging was brilliant. Very clever.
The runway going into the audience, the disco balls, the dressing rooms. Everything. Perfect.

Now the criticism...
1) The pre-show music is a great idea but it sucked. Malcolm McLaren's "Deep In Vogue" was playing as we walked in (which was ironic as The Empress wrote the lyrics) but then it went all down hill. It should be Ball House classics to get people in the mood. (Hip Hop is only played in "Banji" categories). Old school Disco would have been fun too. I would have loved to put some music together for this. Oh well.

2) I know Sweetie is our girl but (and I'm being totally objective here) she was really underused.
As I said, EVERYONE in the show was great, and I know the story line was really about the boys but every time Sweetie came on the stage it lit up. She is riveting. Sweetie could have really been in it a lot more. As a "Drag Darth Vader" an "Evil Queen" (which of course we all know she is in real life. No great acting needed there).
Even if it's not Sweetie, the "Evil Queen" character could be a great part.

3) Some of the dialogue (especially early on in the show) is a little long and hard to understand. It really zings when characters deliver lines like "An old tree throws a lot of shade" or whatever it was. SNAP! There are some KILLER lines in this show. We were howling. A few more of those!

4) One thing that holds it back a little are all the references to other shows, songs, stars, pop culture etc. It would be much stronger without the obvious nods to Dreamgirls and Beyonce and other pop cultural icons. This show could BE a Dreamgirls. Any one of those those girls could BE a Jennifer Hudson or a Jennifer Holiday or a Beyonce or a Vanessa Williams.

I think with just a little polishing this show could be really big.
Broadway big.
If it had some killer original songs it could go all the way.

But then again...
what do I know?
I'm hardly Addison Dewitt.

I did really relate to "DJ Deity".
As a DJ for The House of Xtravaganza I felt for poor little "Deity".
Especially when his father told him he HAD to walk the Ball.
"I'm a DJ he pleaded".
"I don't care bitch. Bring home a trophy or ELSE!"
(or was that MY father David saying that to ME? It got a little fuzzy at times).
I've had to walk (and was chopped to pieces). It's not fun.

Anyway...
LOVED IT!!!!
