Courtney Love explains her dissatisfaction with a court artist's sketch as the rocker is besieged by reporters yesterday outside Manhattan Criminal Court.

Grunge goddess Courtney Love kept her shirt on for once - but still did her best to turn a lower Manhattan courthouse into her own personal mosh pit.
The breast-baring raunch rocker spawned a roiling crowd of reporters, bummed a half-smoked cigarette from a passerby and chastised a sketch artist for an unflattering portrait.

She even held a rambling news conference in the ladies room.

Almost as an afterthought, Love briefly answered charges that she beaned a fan with a microphone stand during an East Village gig.

"The police have a conspiracy against rocker chicks," Love told arresting officers after the March 18 concert at Plaid nightclub on E. 13th St. near Broadway, court papers revealed.

The widow of Nirvana legend Kurt Cobain faces assault and endangerment charges for allegedly tossing the mike that hit Gregory Burgett, 24, of London, Ky.

Fresh off a red-eye flight from Los Angeles, Love showed up two hours late for the routine hearing at Manhattan Criminal Court and fought her way through 50 reporters and photographers.

The 39-year-old ranted about her financial woes and issued an out-of-the-blue apology to actor Russell Crowe for failing to return his calls. "That would've been a hot date," she said.

After Judge Kathryn Freed told Love to return to court next month, the mascara-loving rocker headed for the bathroom, where she held court for an impromptu gathering of female reporters.

She bitterly denounced a married ex-boyfriend. "This is God saying you do not sleep with married men," Love quipped before a court officer cut short the stall-side confab.

Out on the courthouse steps, Love sipped on a soda and said she had to touch up a sketch artist's rendition of her.

"Come on, I'm much prettier than that," said Love, adding longer eyelashes and hair to the drawing.

Before hopping in a limo for the ride back to her apartment a few blocks away, she talked a passerby into handing her the remains of a cigarette.

"If I'm addicted to anything, it's nicotine," Love said.
