While still living in DC in the early 90s, Split: Portrait of a Drag Queen played at the American Film Institute at the Kennedy Center, and I went to see the film, but not knowing much about it other than it was about a drag queen, I dragged my friends to come with me. Well, we all loved the movie, and I was fascinated with her oh-so-glamorous life (or so it appeared on celluloid), yet throughout the story the theme was her rising up and above any perceived pain or misery. Being a showgirl,...

Wow...that is an incredible resemblance. I have to rent split and possibly queen. I say possibly queen, because Miss Flawless told me she was going to be having a screening, but that was a while ago. I was away for the weekend and didn't get a chance to get online after starting the post. Needless to say, when I got back, was pleased by the response and your insights. Thank you and of course if there are any more...keep em comin!

His voice is like the Earth itself singing (or the male aspect of it anyway). Totally real! He had many of the then cutting edge counter culture singers on his television show in the 1960s like Bob Dylan (several times). I must admit it was AFTER Dylans motorcycle accident when he no longer had that edginess with an abandon that he had prior to it, but he was still way out there as far as Mr. and Mrs. Average American was concerned. Johnny Cash Came out strongly against the Vietnam war at a...

Sally's in the mid 90s was always a bit edgy for me, the white girl in the sweater set and miniskirt, but that is what I loved about it. I went there more as an alternative to Edelweiss, or when Edelweiss was enduring many of it's intermittent closings by the Guiliani squads, but I loved that it existed along with all the other Times Square spots like Edelweiss & Cats. Sweetie always wanted Queen Bee to be a mix of the uptown and downtown drag/tranny worlds (a mix of BoyBar girls,...

I was shocked to read that Stephen Sprouse has moved on to another dimension, and at such a youngish age. So sad, of course, but from the press, I never get the medical details on the course of illness & cause of death, which are always of interest to me as the nurse. If it was heart failure secondary to lung cancer, then a quick end to that story is the best (a slow death not being able to breathe is horrible- as I have witnessed on more than one occasion in my business) and hopefully...

I was just reading the posts in this category, and noticed the vast majority speak only of Davids more recent work and ignore his stuff from the early 1970's, which I consider his most inspired work (Space Oddity; The Man Who Sold the World; Hunky Dory; The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars; Aladin Sane).
