Re: Beams to New Orleans

Chi Chi ·
I will be closing this topic a few days after today's Katrina anniversary, as well as the pre-Katrina "Postcards from New Orleans" topic in Elsewhere. Your thoughts on this anniversary are welcome, I myself am quite numb. Our last trip to New orleans was a month ago. It was a special trip because we got to deliver the last costume for the theater project we've been doing in St. Bernard Parish in person. Johnny and I went to meet the entire SHINE PRESENTS troupe for happy hour at Molly's on...

Re: Dean Johnson - Death of a Legendary Legend

Jacob R Clark ·
I've been very disturbed by all of this since my friend Roger DeGennaro, a Howl festival organizer, told me about Dean's death last night. So I must, like all of you, share my memories of Dean in order to ease the sadness I feel. I met Dean when he was doorman at the Boybar back in 1983. You couldn't NOT notice him, with that too-tall, lanky frame and basso profundo voice (he could have been the bastard son of Living Theater co-founder Julian Beck!)--not to mention his cutting wit and...

The first time I saw Dean was in a movie, MONDO NEW YORK that was played at an independent movie theater in Tokyo, 1988. Before Dean/Velvet Mafia, I have never seen anyone who said/sang "Fuck You" to such slow Jazzy music and that was just so cool. Since then, you have been quite an ispiration to me, Dean.
