There have been several dogs stolen in the EV lately, all left tied up outside of stores. This is part of a larger wave of dog thefts in the city this year. PLEASE help repost this flier and BEWARE!

God that is fantastic news! I'm shocked that it's true. Hopefully this means we can stave off the canyon-izing of the EV for another decade.

I always gag when I see Chico do one of those pop celebrities Miss U. The one of Selena was especially bad. Ech. It makes me think he does that lazy comic book style just to fit the kitschy sentiments, or he doesn't even care about the subject he just does those types because he thinks everyone is in to them. And no one cares about Lady Di, Mother Teresa or Selena in the EV. There are much more rigorous aerosol artists around, check out the huge mural on the corner of 2nd and A. I will give...

How ominous! I wonder what the augurs of the Caesars would say about that one? Eagles are hawks - not all hawks are eagles . . . that is eagles are in the hawk family. I'm not a bird expert, just a dilettante, but hawks are typified by a number of identifiers: talons, beak type, wing shape, flying/gliding behavior ability etc. (Oh goodness, I'm a bird nerd!) Most of the hawks found in NYC are Peregrine Falcons - which were reintroduced to the area few years back. They were almost killed out...

1. They're going after the low-end establishments that have less resources to combat raids and that are much more vulnerable to being shut in the face of heavy fines. 2. 40,000 cops in the city + historically low crime rate = a lot of cops with less to do, sooooo, why not start looking for something to do, like harrassing bars. But I have to say, the EV has become overpopulated with bars/clubs, and the vast majority of 'patrons' are not from the area. If you were looking to start up a club...

Europeans have been hungering soooo long to laugh at the US and now the Idiocracy, and its followers, have provided many more reasons than are needed. I kind of wonder about the bar/club explosion in the EV anyway. It is like half the establishments are sort of like mimicing what NYC nightlife is supposed to be. The EV nightlife scene, I mean just the physical environment with smaller streets, architecture still on a human scale, -is not really meant to be capable of existing as a kind of...

The people who have started renting in the building I'm in near C are now 30ish types who are just taking rooms for the weekend. They don't work, and just want a place in the EV to party on the weekends. At, like, $1,400 a month for a tiny 500 sq ft room, it is totally the idleclass.

Re: Fingernails, New Mexico - A Remote Location

Well yes but S'tan, the boozy upchuck smell of the EV is leavened with, like, patchouli and bad designer brand perfumes. I like what hatches mentions about the mega-chain outlets being magnets for lawbreakers and contributing to the general social breakdown. Some city official (despite the obligatory Wall Mart and Chilli's payola they must have taken) should really start a protest and re-zoning referendum. I think Fingernails could be a great negative example other communities could use at...

This should perhaps go under nightclubs. Or perhaps the nightclubs topic should just move here altogether. I always look forward to making the rounds this time of year, catching up with old friends and generally just 'living' a little more; I really get caught up in the festiveness of the season, the socializing, the maybe too much drinking..all of which I found at the lovely RAPTURE recently, mmmmmm. So, feeling in the holiday spirit, and just wanting to throw back some drinks in an...

This is a great topic. We just saw a clip on "Veselka" last night on TV and have never been. A lot of the other shops mentioned in the segment had closed (Love Saves The Day, and the video store next to Trash)so we hoped it was still open. We're SO there next time we're in the EV. We found a really interesting case of a group taking this idea one step further. A group called CarrotMob who do "Reverse Boycotts" on businesses. They did one here in Park Slope for family owned Tarzian Hardware...

Leave the gun, bring 'takoyaki': East Village This is an actual headline to a 'news' story about Japanese food in the EV from a major Japanese daily newspaper, Japan Times. It says a lot bout what the rest of the world sees as being typical American culture.

Hi, 7 . Wow, the article wrote about almost every Japanese food bussiness in that area http://search.japantimes.co.jp...in/nn20110114f2.html . Next article would be all about Ramen noodle bars? I can't stand with any more JP something especially in EV. I know why JP business owners prefer EV but, hope they find a neighborhood called upper east side and move there....

Just passed so many "ice cars" on our walk around EV / St. Marks Church. On the 10th street side of the church towards 3rd avenue it seemed like alot of BIG tree branches came down, or several trees. Hope no-one was underneath..EV is still incredibly pretty though as long as you don't look down!

This is SO not correct - Steve Cannon is an EV gem and so is A Gathering of the Tribes. NOT EVERYTHING in the EV has to ALWAYS be about $ or we will have no EV left. And who kicks out a blind man who has been paying his rent AND providing a refuge for impoverished poets in the EV? Sheesh, I'm disgusted. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03...region/07tribes.html

Oddly in my looking for this topic to reply (my mind admittedly Elsewhere), I landed on a very interesting post in Studio 54 by Miss ChiChi . I think the article is well worth a read and very much related to this subject. Minerva your post speaks eras of wisdom (I am in awe truly). There is real truth in all of your words, so easy to travel along with each beat, save this one thing I must counter-culture: the description of alt youth. I think many of you here have been hitting on an important point, -the balance between providing a way for the performers to present their work to a wider public while still feeling that the event is controlled by our interests yet still 'open' enough, just enough, to the straight world so that the khaki arrivistes feel secure about attending and getting some exposure to the 'underground'. This is a real old American cultural tradition that goes way back to the founding days of New Orleans...

Hatches, I'm sorry to hear that skinhead beef acted like that even to performers. That day, I could check in as press and an event staff escorted me to the area in front of the stage, but right after he was left, a security kicked me out saying I didn't have a press sticker on me. I wasn't given it somehow so tried to explain about it to him, but that beef just kept barking "Out! Out! Out! ... ", and it took me for a while to get back. The atmosphere of the backstage was like that of boot...

Two of the recent points talked about here; underground vs. prominence for an artist, and Sweetie's luscious bitching about the 'demise' of the EV as a kind of freeforall zone: both have to do on a certain level with adversity. I think there is a not so subtle imbalance now that has to do with a kind of, how to say, 'expiration date'. Intitially people who ran the spaces in the EV were committed to being way underground but the mentality about this has changed quite drastically with the...
