Re: The Cockettes

I was too young (and on the wrong coast) to have experienced any of the Cockettes magick firsthand, except in one small way - I bartended at Hibiscus's memorial service at Danceteria a decade after the period this film documents. I remember being intrigued by these glittering elders - so captivating and charismatic even in their grief - and knowing instinctively that someday their mysteries would be revealed. Finally, last night, twenty years later I got that chance, and was completely...

This guy's incredible, my new hero. Daddy, you should invite him to NYC, get him to run for mayor. He can drive his trailer over from New Zealand. What is it about New Zealanders, anyway? They're all totally bonkers. When I used to bounce at this big sports bar in Chicago, we knew whenever we carded on a New Zealand passport that there'd be a fight that night. Every single time. Of course, later, when bouncing at the gay bar up the road, every night a New Zealander came in we knew we'd find...

I heard at the Jackie party last night very upsetting news which was updated for us this morning by Antony. Page ingested "a large amount of poison" sometime yesterday I believe, and is now in Cabrini hospital. According to reports last night it was believed to be an OD rather than a suicide attempt. Antony tells me that she was moved to the hospice of Cabrini this morning. That is obviously not a good sign - a move to hospice generally means that a patient is terminal. JD was also told last...

When I first arrived in the Blade Runner 'esuqe city that New York was in 1990, I remember seeing this tall "Woman" with a bleach blonde flatop, horned rimmed sunglassed, in the dark of night, and glitter red lipstick, while dressed in a retro new wave look about 10 years before anyone thought it was cool to bring that back. She waltzed up to me and said, "Hi, I'm Page...who are you ?" My eyes opened a little wider and what was possible in this life became a little broader and I saw the...

We've been 120% impressed and inspired by Jojo and his art since the day we laid eyes on him close to 10 years ago. Which incidentally was the very first night we ever went out clubbing in Chicago. From his dolls, to his drawings, sculptures, installations costumes, character exploration, hair and makeup skills, Whatever Jojo touches becomes beautiful and mystical. So much of his personality is transferred into his art that it is hard to separate the two. Pictures rarely do Jojo's dolls...

A bit of explanation... Mark Twain is said to have once wrote: "When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Cincinnati because it's always 20 years behind the times." This still holds true. We were asked to host a night at a local gay club here in Cincinnati about a year after Zazoo was "born." we agreed, but only on our terms... What did this mean? Well... 1. Good music. 2. No crappy Drag Queens badly lipsyching to 3 year-old songs. 3. "Freaks" got in free They reluctantly agreed to...

Actually the film "The Night Porter" is just a zesty retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Just two star-crossed lovers held apart by the divisiveness' of others. The conflict could not be resolved in their relationship because as in Romeo and Juliet the social abyss was set too wide. Mind you their love was genuine and true, it just could not conquered their extreme circumstances. A very important film in my opinion because no one gets off easily. Just like life.
