Its the White Rabbit song though that will probably live on for another thousand years. It became like an official anthem of the 'San Francisco Sound' of the late 1960's early '70's. A famous tell all book of the times was called 'Go Ask Alice' - the supposedly true story of a young girl's decent into rabid drug use and eventual death with all the stock depradations on the way down. The flick was done with such an ambivalent tone though that it never rose to the status of being...

LOTS more, Chi Chi... Miss Webb and I were up front and center about only one person deep. The Sick Fucks w/ Tish & Snooky were fabulous; just don't get shows like that - where "punk rock" sounds refreshing and charged and purposeful. Joe Hurley & the Gents were also phenomenal...Oddly, the much of the crowd on the floor where we stood were somewhat blank and unmoved - until the Beastie Boys came out and woke them up. The crush of the crowd behind me reminded me of the excitement of...

American radio is shit anyways, unless you have XM Radio or some equivalent thereof. Also too many DJs (not the Soulwax guys)play one type of music and one type of music only. Unfortunately I wasn't there at the Garage (born in the wrong decade I guess!) By the way those 2 many Djs discs are mad! Talk about types of music that don't go together! I mean mad in a good way. New Order and the Clash are punk and they aren't. the Clash became more mainstream as they dragged on and New Order was...

Re: Opening "The Box" - Formerly "When the party bombs"

mr.joe ·
It's true, Seven, that factors surrounding war, a dubiously inflated perception of economy, and an even more hideous political machine working overtime to pummel fear into our daily consciousness all contribute to the lengths people will go to in order to find distraction. With "pleated pants" soldiers shelling out $700 for a table at The Box, I imagine they feel they are paying for entitlement to act out on others in a way they're unable to act out on each other at the office every day. Dean Johnson passed away this week. Details surrounding Dean's death, along with the death of another young man are still uncertain, and an investigation is, as of this writing, still ongoing. I have included details and links about Dean's life below. Dean is survived by his father is Ellis Johnson and his sister is Beth. For several years, Dean cared for and visited his mother Linda, who succumbed to a battle with cancer in 2006. He was a devoted son, brother and friend to scores of people...

Oh dear. Such sad news. Two of my old show-biz partners, Tabboo! and then Philly (notoriously famed for projectile vomiting in the Pyramid production of Attack of the Spider Crabs from Star Nebula), each called me yesterday to break the news about Dean. I'm so glad that someone here wrote about remembering his laughter in the Pyramid dressing room. I remember that too, and his different laughs. He had a slow snickering laugh that could build into a bigger, volcanic eruption of laughter, sort...

Such sad sad news. Dean to me epitomized that true "downtown icon" - what a generation of artists(including myself) was inspired by to move to NYC. Visually beautiful in his brazen baldness and shades, aurally assaulting, verbally sharp as a razor. He embodied that true "punk" aesthetic of not only saying "Fuck You" en flagrante, but living it moment to moment. He will be sorely missed. Thank you Dean for Red Rocks, thank you Dean for your Wild Heart!

Re: Jayne County!!!

mr.joe ·
I first met Jayne County at Club Velvet in Atlanta in 1992. She performed in the upstairs "lounge" - which basically consisted of a bar, some frou-frou chairs, and a small stage. When I saw Miss County screaming into the microphone, rolling around on the floor as if she were having a seizure (which she may have been), that was when I knew seriously knew that punk rock was ALIVE! My boyfriend at the time, Rob. Walton (now editor-in-chief for Playboy.com) and I were somehow enlisted to...

To say that I am crushed by Dean's passing is an understatement. It's like losing Warhol. Sprouse. Now Johnson. I met Dean when I was 17 and doing fashion shows at Danceteria. He had just finished a perfomance, scoped me out and asked me on a date. We went for chinese then headed to my apartment where we vacuumed up copius ammounts of shitty blow, attempted a make out session and then found ourselves in the typical abyss of coke dick. Dean suddenly said, "you wanna be a one time trick or...

DEAN YR A WITCH! We all knew this, but it became progressively a bigger part of his life , and this last year he was officially "wiccan". It started out years ago, we used to have these very punk rock, organic , unstructured improvised pagan rituals on the beach, all the time. I remember one time in p-town, he was getting oh so much playtime in those dunes, and i'd read, tan, and swim with the guys (tony dale martin ricky) while he took sex breaks- our intention that day for ritual was about...

Nope, I didn't know him personally. I was audience. Back in the day when Whispers at the Pyramid was something I thought would never disappear; it was a new home. Nope, no talent here, never got on stage or did a damn thing. But then Dean started Rock and Roll Fag bar, and us "audience" types - generic shy gay punk types - had a place to listen to the music we liked. Never knew when the next one would be held, or where. But Dean somehow managed to put together a night for those of us who...
