Yesterday, I was sitting on the back porch of a friend's place in Brooklyn, when all of the sudden, windows were raised, back doors slammed open and all throughout this one block in Park Slope, the news of Michael's death was shouted from window to window to porch to yard. It was such a very astounding, surreal moment that this news should be disseminated in such a Molly Goldberg fashion, though we may be living in the midst of the 21st century's hi-tech Age Of Information, and I cannot imagine it happening anywhere else but in Brooklyn.
Hattie, funny you mention that... We live in Park Slope, and the neighborhood was WAY tuned in. I got the message in a round-about way, also completely internet free.

I was walking in Prospect Park with Scooter, for a bit over an hour yesterday between 6:45 and 8pm...

In three separate parts of the park, I heard Michael Jackson BLASTING.

The first incident made me look up, because it was a woman with a baby stroller near the Carousel. The Carousel was ironically playing The Beatles "OB-LA-DI, OB-LA-DA" and she was singing to her baby "The way you make me feel."

I got chills. It was something about the combination of the songs and the woman's face that made me think it was a special moment.

Then I was over near Nethermead, and heard "I'll be there" playing...

Finally I got to the intersection of 5th Street and Prospect Park West and there were a whole group of teens with their car doors open blasting the Jackson 5's "I want you back" singing along and dancing on the sidewalk.

That was it. I thought.. "Something's happened with Michael Jackson."

I got home, and the first thing Zaz says was "Wow, big news day, huh?" and I said "Yeah, poor Farrah." and he said "You didn't hear about Michael Jackson?"

I said "Well, yeah, I guess I did."

Such a genius, but such a sad life.

MJ tributes in full force here in the Bay. Yesterday at the Trans gathering in Dolores Park it was MJ all day long. Spoke to P-Raw on the phone back in Brooklyn, and she said "Well, Michael Jackson was a Tranny March if there ever was one!"

A friend and I were driving here from Portland the other day; we spent several hours in the majestic Redwoods on our way here, and as we were leaving we each received a text. Emerging from such giants only to hear of a giant's passing was pure poetry.
All this Michael Madness is too much!
Neverland, The drugs, The legacy, The "burning questions" that every cable "news" show thinks that we all are asking...

But now it seems it's all about the kids.
What will happen to the kids?
Prince Michael, Paris and little "Blanket".

As a parent myself I understand the concern.

There is nothing in the world that makes me as happy as when I'm dangling my little boy "Mattress" over a balcony.

Here is my little "Mattress" hanging on for dear life in Barcelona.

Don't worry "Mattress", Daddy will catch you.
