Lucille
Good news! There's a party that's listed in "Party Listings/Tranny Chasers" being given by Femme Fever on June 30-they specify that GG's are welcome. Take a look, I think it just might make you wet.

PS- I only saw Leigh Bowery perform once at Wigstock when it was in the park--"she" gave birth onstage-it was amazing! And of course I've seen him in Lucien Freud's paintings where he just looks like landscapes of flesh.

But,ladies I really think we should put Leigh in the Legends topic. Daddy when I clicked on "Admin. Options" to do it I didn't have security clearance. Any suggestions?
--------------------------------------------------
(Lucille - it's Minerva...Don't know what your schedule is like, but if possible, one of these weeks, you should come to Cheez Whiz and meet the fine pees there. Miss Jack would be glad to take you down, I'm sure, and I personally would love to meet you sometime, see what you're all about, tease you about garbagemen... wink

Ta-ta,
Rose and Minerva
I met Leigh Bowery at a Green Door party on St. Mark's Place (when he was alive!). I bought him a drink and we danced the night away! He was wearing the "best" costume ever and his face was painted to match the fabric of his huge, skirted dress, he was BIG. He wore a gestapo helmet (silver)which made him more attractive....He told me that "it was the best time he ever had". And I believed him!..I will look for the book. I visited Freud's show at the Met to see what Leigh "really" looked like!
When I return from Paris, I will go everywhere, Miss Rose, thanks for the info. As my intimates know, it is difficult for me to attend other than Friday or Saturday nights.
I was in the park last night and was told that I missed Jack and Penney Arcade by moments! Alas!
It has been suggested/suggestive that I meet you Minerva, it will happen!
once again i found myself thinking, what would Leigh do? and while i am planning a look, i find myself referencing his book quiet often.
he always completed his looks perfectly, a very keen sense for detail. that my dear is a true love for your art, a visionary!
Leigh, we were all robbed by your early death.
you didn't get the luxury of life and the opportunity to exhaust your creativity.
the world is fortunate enough to have other visionaries who saw his genious and took advantage to document some of his life and art. there are videos, clothing, his images, books, paintings, and his music to enjoy.
i often wonder if he were still here with us what direction would he be going in? unfortunately we will never know.
for me i have memories of his wigstock performance and an early disco 2000 party, but i really don't remember much about that.
Leigh you are truely missed. you are still such an inspiration to me and i'm sure many others.
if anyone has not had the luxury of reading his book take the time to do so. i bought one in london and it is his life story. (hattie, get mine back from patrick for me dear.) i have never seen it for sale in new york.
i also have a book on Lucien Freud including an interview with Lucien Freud by Leigh Bowery. it is amazing very rare.
go see the paintings, see the video art by Charles Atlas you can't get any better than that.
keep his memory alive and pass it on, we can all learn from such a great artist!
We've got the Leigh Bowery Violtte Hardback (ISBN 1-900828-04-9) And just love it to death...

Now there's a new one: "Leigh Bowery Looks" release is imminent. These are all Fergus Greer photographs. (ISBN: 1900828197)

Details:

This book is the definitive and indispensable guide to the unique looks designed and, in these photographs, worn by Leigh Bower. One of Britain's most heroically ambitious yet under appreciated designers and performance artists, Bower remains an inspiration to many contemporary fashion designers, though few are willing to admit it. In "Leigh Bower Looks" you can see why: it contains 300 previously unpublished photographs of Bower, an extraordinary body of work that was the outcome of his collaboration with British photographer Fergus Greer between 1988 and 1994, the year of Bowery's death. Leigh Bower was a performance artist, fashion designer, nightclub sensation, art object, aspiring pop-star, and above all, an icon whose influence traversed the music, art, film, and fashion worlds. Perhaps he is best-known as the muse and nude model for some of Lucian Freud's most famous paintings; ironic for the man who was infamous for his costumes. Originally from Australia, he arrived in London in 1980, and proceeded to establish himself both there and in New York for his scene-making clubs and performances until his death in 1994.

She was a genius! I love drag that involves thought and effort.

When the 80's/90's scene is written about they often dwell on the drugs, and while they menion the freakish looks, they often use a photo of that murderer with sloppy lipstick on.

What a ttracted me to the scene were the beautiful freaks living their art: Leigh, Olympia, Kabuki, Amanda, etc. I wish more attention was paid to the creative energy of that world.e

All the people you mentioned were/are taking it to the next level...

innovators.

A few more Leigh related links:

(does a mean Leigh. Maybe if we all beg, he'll update) smile

I've wanted to see more pics of Kabuki Starshine online... The few of her faces that I've seen blew me away.

Chi Chi, Am I getting a little to hopeless in the devoted section? smile
NEVER, Zaz!

Actually, Leigh and you two (Z and S) met in a party scene in a recent dream of mine. Upon waking, and digesting, I realized that the Boards was the party that the dream referenced, and that Leigh should indeed move here with you!

And I REALLY love the Blitz Kids site, which I originally found from your site's links (and is currently featured on the mothernyc wank of the week.) razz
Wow. I'm going to have to have a discussion with my subconscious, because I want to have dreams about parties with Leigh.

Glad to hear you don't think I'm bogarting the section. I do run a bit obsessive/compulsive so find myself often hopelessly devoted smile

The Blitz Kids site is great. I love how they mixed in quotes from Boy George throughout the site.

BRIGHTON PRIDE TO AUCTION LEIGH BOWERY JACKET
Pride in Brighton & Hove 2002 is auctioning a fabulous
turquoise costume jacket, designed and worn by the legendary
Eighties performance artist, Leigh Bowery, who died in 1994.

both played the flamboyant performer. Julian Clary is
shortly to take over the role. There is currently an
exhibition about Bowery at the ICA in London.
Brighton gay lifestyle magazine, 3SIXTY, has agreed to host

GOD bless the mother boards
Rosie O'Donnel announced on the Jay Leno show that she cut her hair (updated her style)because B_George rejected her initial offer to produce the Taboo show in the U.S. She was too "suburban". She later returned to London to beg again with the new doo and he caved in.

Daddy keep me posted on any Bowery Buffet. I worshiped this soul and was convinced we finally had been visited by beings from another galaxy. Glad to see there are now better links with greater homage then the last time I visited earlier in the summer. Almost was ready to slap up some pages on my own but lacked the content that would conclusively capture his contribution to originality and daring.

This month's PAPER mag has "The History of Drag" mentioning The Cockettes, Divine, Leigh, and Sister Dimension.

It also has an article on Taboo! and Boy, with more information about Rosie's involvement.

The icing on the cake is a Leigh influenced spring fashion spread. Many of his most famous looks are represented, we're not sure how we feel about his looks on young ripped things though...

It's a very good month for PAPER in general.

Here is the NYTimes review of the Leigh Bowery documentary due to hit theatres 11/21. You can catch a preview of the movie on the TRIO channel (102 in Manhattan), which I did on Saturday night before going out.

The documentary covers his life and a panorama of his looks, creations, and art projects through his lifetime.

The Alien Emperor of 80s London

This movie really gives you an idea of what his life was like and how brilliant AND crazy he was...

We taped it on 10/31 and watched it on Sunday. WONDERFUL film.

We loved how it ended on a somewhat cheery note. Even though he got sick so fast and died suddenly, his last wishes and the way his friends and family drank champagne and threw the glasses in after him...

And how great was it that this man who was larger than life, in life, was also too large for his grave in death?

I loved the interviews in the foreground, with the footage in back. esp. when they had him hanging upside-down by one foot.

Very, very well done.
