Well, not to be too contrary my dear Anna but there were plenty of libertines that came over here to start off this country. And the country has at least as long a social history of harboring major non and a-religiously hedonistic traditions. The city of Indianapolis for instance started as nothing so much as an in-plain-sight hideout for every kind of cutthroat, thief, outcast, prostitute, pre-20th century slacker, apostate priest, flim-flam artist, snakeoil salesman, Madame, juvenile delinquint and all round free-thinker from the Ohio Valley to Chicago. So I still say it is not a Puritan or religiously conservative country as much as the current Idiocracy wants to front that. It is simply that those types are throwing their weight around now and making a lot of noise. The statistic on the so-called 'moral issues' voters is that they comprise just barely 22 percent of the electorate. All the really happy people are the majority who are busy satisfying their libidos, they aren't clamoring to change laws and clamp down on other people's pleasures. It is the Sour Minority making noxious pests of themselves doing that.

Here's a sign of hope: some bible thumpers are attempting to run a series of ads promoting a new translation of the bible for "young people" and it's "written in today's language, for today's times."

I'd love to see the lingo they use to describe the crucifixion..."J wanted to jus' go back to his crib, but his brothas made him hang-out-n-shit all day on this cross till he suffocated hisself or bled to def." Good for Rolling Stone for just saying no. Good for The Onion for saying yes!

Rolling Stone Refuses to Run Ad for Bible

By JAMES PRICHARD, AP

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - Rolling Stone magazine declined to run an advertisement for a new translation of the Bible aimed at young people, the nation's largest Bible publisher said Wednesday.

Zondervan, a division of HarperCollins Publishers, bought space in the magazine months ago as part of an ad campaign for Today's New International Version, said Doug Lockhart, Zondervan's executive vice president of marketing.

"Last week, we were surprised and certainly disappointed that Rolling Stone had changed their mind and rejected our ad," he said.

A telephone message seeking comment was left Wednesday at the New York headquarters of Wenner Media LLC, publisher of Rolling Stone.

Lockhart said Zondervan, based in Grand Rapids, paid Wenner Media last July to run the ad in February, when the Bible is due on bookshelves.

On Tuesday, USA Today quoted Kent Brownridge, general manager of Wenner Media, as saying his staff first saw the ad copy last week, and "we are not in the business of publishing advertising for religious messages."

Lockhart said the ad features the face of a contemplative-looking young man and includes this copy:

"In a world of almost endless media noise and political spin, you wonder where you can find real truth. Well, now there's a source that's accurate, clear and reliable. It's the TNIV - Today's New International Version of the Bible. It's written in today's language, for today's times - and it makes more sense than ever."

Media outlets that agreed to carry the ad include Modern Bride, The Onion, MTV.com and AOL, Lockhart said.

"DO YOU ENJOY PORN? If so, you really should listen up...
by: Magdalene
Hello Everyone,
As a few of you know, I own an adult-oriented (non-porn) website. The majority of my friends and business acquaintances work in the porn and/or BDSM industry. Right now, there's something BIG going down, and it's something you - as the general public - are not being made aware of.

As of June 23rd - assuming the freespeech.org lawyers do not receive an injunction from the Supreme Court this week - it's open season on ALL American adult webmasters. Do you have a pic somewhere on the web? Have you ever signed a model release for it? Do you enjoy porn? Read inside...

As of June 23rd, the Justice Department will start an all-out war on 'Adult Content Providers'. The 2257 Task Force. Their goal? Kill us with with threats and paperwork.

An example.....

Any 'adult business', or private home, suspected of running an adult website, can be entered - without a warrant - by whomever the Justice Department allows. It could be cops, Feds, or the local Moral Majority group.

All model releases signed by non-American citizens - retroactively - are now illegal. NO foreign model, no matter if s/he allowed their passport to be photocopied and signed a release, is allowed to appear on any American based adult website or American made video.

While the definition of 'adult content' is NOT defined, every 'adult' image - every. individual. image. - requires a separate model release and a photocopy of picture I.D.. This 'paperwork' must be kept in a separate file, and a separate file must be kept for every individual photo shoot. These files must be kept in alphabetical order, by last name, in a visible area of the provider's office.

Should the 'provider' allow other websites to display, link to, or share images, a signed release is required for EVERY SINGLE IMAGE displayed, including the specific url. The same file-keeping rules apply. This rule includes banners.

The 'Inspectors' are allowed to confiscate any and all personal information regarding the models, for their own personal use.

The webmasters must be available Monday through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Failure to do so can result in TEN years in jail, PER violation.

THIS IS A **FRACTION** OF THE NEW "RULES" THAT WILL BEGIN ON THE 23RD IF THE SUPREME COURT DOES NOT PROVIDE AN INJUNCTION.

You Log Cabinites who enjoy your jerk-off material? FUCK YOU. SUFFER. What did you think would happen?? This has NOTHING to do with child porn. Tracy Lords and her fake I.D. could have still made her movies under these new laws. THIS is about TERRORIZING adult webmasters and the models who work in the business.

And it's working. Two large BDSM video producers I've worked with are getting ready to move to Amsterdam by month's end if the injunction does not go through. If they move, 42 people between them are losing their jobs. The models are frightened - they aren't even 'porn' performers - just 'Bettie Page' style girlie models. They can't feed their kids or pay their mortgages and they're scared shitless that they may lose their kids because the government will get ahold of their personal info.

I wish I could post a link to some sort of activist group that will stop this, but I can't. The freespeech.org people are doing what they can. YOU - as individuals who enjoy adult entertainment in the privacy of your homes - can only get pissed off. If you know ANY George Bush supporting porn fans, RUB their FUCKING FACES in this. Where's their beloved "individual rights" now?

If you have posed for an adult provider in the past, or have performed in a video, GET ON THE PHONE with them NOW. Check into getting your images removed and records destroyed. You DON'T want to be dragged into a lawsuit because the people you worked for didn't have their collective shit together, or were targeted by this 2257 task force."

The free speech coalition did file a lawsuit: free speech coalition

Does anyone realize how stupid America looks around the world with all of this puritanical shit!!???? Its getting like early Taliban days! Was watchin some tv show the other day a huge feature about young married couples practicing the rhythm method birth control... it was just hiddeous... these scary young couples showing how they have menstruation calendars on their walls talking about 'sexual relations as a procreation'. It was so cold, so scary.
The rhythm method is the only form of "birth control" endorsed by the Catholic Church. With this new pope,"a hard-line guardian of conservative doctrine," there is zero chance that there will be any kind of reform any time soon, which considering the people around the world dying of AIDS, including many countries still very influenced by the Vatican, is criminal.
The Xians are just exactly like the fucking Taliban.

I found out my building was bought by "devout Muslims," as the super put it. After eleven years of peace with my liberal landlord... I had to close the Whipshack. They come in and enforce the loose laws of NY, I am fucked.

So today I am sitting here in a pile of archival detritus, getting ready to take it all to NYU Library. I'm a writer, fucks, a writer, an artist, not a whore anymore, thanks! Jesus thanks you, Allah thanks you, I'm clean, man...
Then my lawyer calls to say the Muslims don't accept my
"compliance". That there is still "advertising on the web"... the address is apparently posted somewhere!! Not that I ever posted it, ever!!

So I spent about 20 minutes on every search engine and find this one little ancient page -- advertising a KICKING video, done by Mistress Remi/Johanna Constantine probably back in the 1990s. She's smashing in faces with 7 inch spikes! And they helpfully posted my bloodie address.

So I send them an email, it disappears.
Now what? What next to get the New Yorkers out of New York?

And what the fuck difference does it make anyhow? They are tearing the building down!
They need to have the address sacrosanct for the wrecking crew?

I HATE THE NEW NEW YORK
ME TOO.

That library is lucky to get any archival anything you deign to provide to them.

I think, about the time it comes to pass that your building is demolished, I will pass by very late one night to salt the fallow property with a fair amount of pork. Or just nail some to whatever construction site fence they errect. It will in part be an homage to the 12 year old girl whose name means 'Full of Beauty' who, when developers demolshed the performance space known as the Gas Station on B and 2nd, ceremoniously nailed a dead dog to the fence around the construction pit. Before the inspired waif walked away she sternly placed a police hat on the canine corpse. No one touched it, not even the contractor. Cops had to come. To this day anyone living in the $4,000 a month apartments now on the site is regarded as a pariah in the neighborhood. Not because they are interlopers, but because they are cursed.
What I will be looking for in the demolition are the Pompeiian Walls meticulously painted over a period of four months by the artist Madeline von Forester, with the aid of yours truly and several others of our company. I love them to death... and though I didn't want to say it at the time, I've heard the reproduction of Pompeiian themes is notoriously bad luck. Hence a volcanic eruption of money-grubbing shit has washed over us. But I am not buried (yet.)

When they pull it all down, we are going to run in and save the panels... to reconstitute them in the new Whipshack, whether that may be on Center Street (my newest prospect) or on the Mesa Marquesa.

I love your story.
What is it with the $4K rent... this is a number that comes up over and over. $4K. That is fifty grand a year in RENT. I think it is very much a cursed number.

Asking a working artist with a very healthy income and an extant business of 20 + years for a GUARANTOR to pay rent... is like a bunch of midget ogres informing a grown-up she can't play unless she has a rich friend. It does not humiliate me, but it appalls me to see them trying to humilate me.

I have been dreaming alot of bloodsucking ogres.
Brainless, moronic beings who want to suck my bones. (The other night Madeline and I escaped in a "Model T.") Whomever they are, they're born-again shitasses of some stripe or other... born-again real estate speculators or born-again towel heads. I hate them all.

STAN

PS: Thank you for the kind word about the archives! The main torture chamber is now full of crumbling paper.

New Law to OUTLAW Adult Video

WASHINGTON - Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), one of the most religio-conservative politicians in Congress today, has introduced House Resolution (H.R.) 3726, which would amend several federal laws, including the Recordkeeping and Labeling Act (18 U.S.C. §2257). The move marks the Religious Right's most blatant attempt yet to destroy the adult video industry, this time by granting the Justice Department increased powers to target adult producers within a state, without having to wait for them to ship their product across state lines.

.... The new bill would eliminate the "actual" from the portions of the law requiring producers to keep records of performers of "sexually explicit conduct" and would criminalize retailers from selling, for instance, a copy of Blue Lagoon or The Last Picture Show if it lacked the "2257 notice" universally seen on hardcore adult videos.

"If I'm reading this correctly, this expands the scope of 2257 to make it apply to simulations," commented attorney J.D. Obenberger. "Now, there's no constitutional difference in protection between hardcore and softcore depictions, so I don't think that by expanding the scope of it, there's a strong constitutional argument that's raised by this. I think they have the power to do this, and what they're doing is they're just making it a nastier, uglier world and saying, even if it's simulated stuff, you still have to comply with 2257."

Even if this measure passes, these 'lawmakers' are simply delusional if they think they are going to shut off the flow of porn, or clean up mainstream movies and teevee. The world is so flooded with this material. Of course they can make an extremely hostile environment and place intense scrutiny on the industry workers. But real fact is that porn IS the community value, that is why so many billions of dollars in business are generated by it. The larger question is really the ability of lawmakers to control culture in general.35 years ago in a very large proportion of municipalities possession and use of marijuana was decriminalized with penalities amounting to a $5 traffic ticket. Now look at the federal initiative against the medicinal pot industry. It is a similar condition within governement regarding porm. Like pot, porn has been a real part of US culture for so long that to not recognize it amounts to a scotoma, in psychological terms, a 'blind spot' in perception.
The law passed.

FBI Launches Porn Squad
By Jayson Romaine
Tuesday, September 20, 2005

WASHINGTON "” Attorney General Alberto Gonzales told the FBI in July that establishing an anti-obscenity squad was one of his top priorities, prompting the bureau's Washington office to launch a countrywide job search to fill the new squad.

According to a job posting, which was sent to all 56 FBI field offices by FBI Director Robert Mueller, the new eight-member team will target "manufacturers and purveyors" of pornography in the hopes of bolstering federal obscenity prosecutions throughout the country.

The posting was very explicit: "The best odds of conviction come with pornography that includes bestiality, urination, defecation, as well as sadistic and masochistic behavior."

The creation of the new squad has many in the FBI quietly grumbling over the diversion of resources, though no one in the bureau has spoken publicly against the issue. Nonetheless, federal obscenity prosecutions have been a rarity since the Reagan era, and issues of terrorism in recent years have prompted more than a few anonymous memos to circulate FBI offices decrying what some see as mismanaged priorities.

"The war on terror must be over then?" asked one memo, obtained by the Washington Post.

....Since I am out of the business now and "reformed" I think I will apply for the job. I was never into poop anyhow.
Now.... tell me again.... what were the Taliban doing to the people... now tell me again... whats the difference btw then and the 'new' USA Bush of States? Errr.... spin doctors...clever media pitches... hidden info to the mass...

I guess all of us will be out of our jobs soon.
Guess we will all have to find jobs in 'the church' cos u know in organized religion theres no interest in porn or sex for that matter right.

PS Meantime infant mortality rate in the States is so shocking that the UN have commisioned special reports but i guess thats not really as important as someone having a hand-shandy in the privacy of their own homes....

I was reading another article about it, and the agents will have to be assigned... as "Pooper Scoopers" I guess. They are running for the hills, NO ONE WANTS THAT JOB.

There was a funny line in the article about how the job requires a very, very strong stomach to look at all that stuff.

I'm waiting for Hurricane STAN to hit Washington DC and spiral up their asses good and hard once and for all. He's next after Rita.
Ahh the Brits are having a laugh at the American Puritans again... This from the Fab Independent newspaper http://news.independent.co.uk/world/asia/article314002.ece

"Censored in the name of the Lord
What are decent-minded, US Christian conservatives to do if they want to watch a film without upsetting their sensibilities? Now they can watch their favourite blockbuster stripped of any sex and violence, thanks to two new companies. Andrew Gumbel reports from Los Angeles "
That is totally pathetic.

Well acc. to the new law, just SHOWING murder is equivalent to murder, so of course... from that article:

Troy

Brad Pitt has been summoned to kill his enemy. He raises his sword, runs towards him, and then ... er, not much. CleanFlicks cuts away to another shot. "The point we would make here is that you still see the guy dies, you still see that Brad Pitt killed him, and so you don't really take away from the story of what's going on," explains company founder Ray Lines.
In the next six weeks, South Dakota lawmakers will decide whether to make abortion a crime.

A bill that would ban abortion in the state will be introduced within the next two days.

The bill will be called the Woman's Health and Life Protection Act. It will ban abortion, but won't prosecute a doctor who performs one to save a woman's life.

Meanwhile back in the UK ---
A mother has lost her court battle for a parent's "right to know" if girls are being advised on abortion.
Sue Axon, 51, of Baguley, Manchester, wanted the law changed to prevent girls under 16 getting confidential advice.

Mrs Axon said she regretted having an abortion 20 years ago that caused her "guilt, shame and depression".

But the High Court rejected a review of guidelines which state terminations do not need parents' consent and doctors should respect girls' confidentiality.

DON"T BUY DOMINO'S!!!!!!!!

The US entrepreneur who made $1bn after founding the Domino Pizza chain is a man with a utopian vision.

Tom Monaghan - nicknamed the pizza pope by the media - has a £230m plan to build the first town in the US to be run according to strict Catholic principles.

The idea is to create a community for 35,000 people - including 5,000 students at a new university - in which, for example, cable television is controlled so there is no pornography, and there are no places where an abortion can be carried out.

The Catholic philanthropist said pharmacies in the town would not sell contraception because their owners would be able to put conditions in lease agreements.
and until that place is built for them, they'll have to white knuckle it and break out into cold sweats before their resistence to the sin of the body breaks down. Whatever floats your boat. I really didn't need any more prodding to steer me away from Dominoes. Yick! Just the idea of going to one of those clone pizzas in this land of the greatest pizza in the world, and the greatest varieties on the theme, right here in Sin City New York.

You are right, Stacy. Pizza anywhere else pretty much sucks, especially the west coast. Figures the founder is a catholic freak - the pizza is godawful.
Pizza Hut must be southern baptist. There's no excuse for that shit...

For some rehearsals for the last CD I did, we used a recording studio owned by an Isreali national on East 32nd Street. It was a rare walk-up building in a high rise zone. The outer office was crammed with about 20 people staring in to computer monitors. It turns out the recording studio, which was loaded with over five million dollars worth of equipment, was a side business for the owner's wife to play with. Those 20 people in the outer office were maintaining the business owner's many porn sites. Obviously though, he was not an afficianado of Rebbe Schneerson!

Not really puritan but more Big Brother... Don't know how much u have noticed a slow slight creep of your personal information / phone calls etc etc etc all being 'shared information'. Had an 'interesting' incident yesterday. I wire $ from time to time to a Principal of a really great school (in a really POOR area) in Kingston, Jamaica. I decided yesterday to go online to Westernunion.com and do it online. Which I did using my credit card etc... seemed all pretty simple until later that evening I get alerts via e-mail and a phone call to say they need "MORE INFORMATION in order to process my wire". I call them back and I get a ZILLION questions. Bear in mind am only sending $100 (hardly a questionable amount!). It started with my social, then it went onto previous known addresses, then they asked me a list of names and asked me how I knew these people!! (None of them I did!?) It was all VERY VERY odd, but seemed very functionary to this western union rep. I was really outraged... They just brushed it all off as 'online security' which was sooo wrong... i felt like I was on some list (which I prob am since I am in Kingston all the time). Anyone else noticed any more 'big brother' incidents?
Anna that seems to have been for money-laundering restrictions... even for $100. People will send $100. 100 times, etc.

Today's horror: Replica of Statue of Liberty adorned with Bible and crucifix...

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/05/us/05liberty.html?th&emc=th

On Independence Day, Lady Liberty was born again.

At a megachurch in Memphis, the Statue of Liberation Through Christ was consecrated Tuesday. The statue, says the church's pastor, is a way of "letting people know that God is the foundation of our nation."

As the congregation of the World Overcomers Outreach Ministries Church looked on and its pastor, Apostle Alton R. Williams, presided, a brown shroud much like a burqa was pulled away to reveal a giant statue of the Lady, but with the Ten Commandments under one arm and "Jehovah" inscribed on her crown.

And in place of a torch, she held aloft a large gold cross, as if to ward off the pawnshops, the car dealerships and the discount furniture outlets at the busy corner of Kirby Parkway and Winchester that is her home. A single tear graced her cheek.

It was not clear if she was crying because of her new home, her new identity as a symbol of religion or, as the pastor said, America's increasing godlessness. But although big cheers went up from the few hundred onlookers at the unveiling, and some people even wore foam Lady Liberty crowns bearing Christian slogans, she was not universally welcomed.

Most of the customers at the Dixie Queen food counter near the church viewed the statue as a cheap attention grab, said Guardia Nelson, 27, who works there.

"It's a big issue," Ms. Nelson said. "Liberty's supposed to have a fire, not a cross."

Elena Martinez, a loan officer visiting Memphis from Houston, said her family was speechless at the sight.

"The Statue of Liberty has a different meaning for the country," Ms. Martinez said. "It doesn't need to be used in a religious sense."

At the pizza place next door, Amanda Houston pronounced the combination of the Statue of Liberty and Christianity "ridiculous."

Soldiers' Words May Test PBS Language Rules

The PBS documentarian Ken Burns has been working for six years on "The War," a soldier's-eye view of World War II, and those who have seen parts of the 14-plus hours say they are replete with salty language appropriate to discussions of the horrors of war.

A new Public Broadcasting Service policy that went into effect immediately when it was issued on May 31 requires producers whose shows are broadcast before 10 p.m. to adhere to tough editing requirements when it comes to coarse language, to comply with tightened rulings on broadcast indecency by the Federal Communications Commission.

Most notably, PBS's deputy counsel, Paul Greco, wrote in a memo to stations, it is no longer enough simply to bleep out offensive words audibly when the camera shows a full view of the speaker's mouth. From now on, the on-camera speaker's mouth must also be obscured by a digital masking process, a solution that PBS producers have called cartoonish and clumsy.

....As for "The War," Ms. Drain called it "the perfect test case for the F.C.C., because who's going to take on veterans of this country who put their lives at risk for an honest, just cause?"

"It's not pornographic; it's not scatological," she said. "It's an emotional expression of a reality they experienced, and it's part of the historical record."

...All they need now is Yossarian stark naked doing the intro.
Oh please. And I love that his name is Tony Perkins because you just know he's dressed in his mother's house coat and peeping through holes when he's not raging against porn.

Conservatives ask FBI to investigate hotel porn

Tuesday, August 22, 2006 Posted: 1809 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) -- Pornographic movies now seem nearly as pervasive in America's hotel rooms as tiny shampoo bottles, and the lodging industry shows little concern as conservative activists rev up a protest campaign aimed at triggering a federal crackdown.

A coalition of 13 conservative groups -- including the Family Research Council and Concerned Women for America -- took out full-page ads in some editions of USA Today earlier this month urging the Justice Department and FBI to investigate whether some of the pay-per-view movies widely available in hotels violate federal and state obscenity laws.

The coalition also is trying to draw attention to CleanHotels.com, a directory of hotels and motels nationwide that pledge to exclude adult offerings from their in-room entertainment service.

Though porn is now cheaply and readily accessible on the Internet, and through many other outlets, the activists chose to target the hotel industry in part because of the well-known brands of corporations that cater to family vacationers as well as business travelers.

"These are places that you take your family -- these are respectable institutions," said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council. "Anything that brings porn into the mainstream is a concern. It just desensitizes people."

Precise statistics on in-room adult entertainment are hard to come by. By some estimates, adult movies are available in roughly 40 percent of the nation's hotels, representing more than 1.5 million rooms. Industry analysts suggest that these adult offerings generate 60 to 80 percent of total in-room entertainment revenue -- several hundred million dollars a year.

The recent newspaper ad mentioned no hotel companies by name because of legal concerns, but it did target the two major suppliers of in-room adult movies -- South Dakota-based LodgeNet and Denver-based OnCommand, a subsidiary of Liberty Media Corp. The ad accused both companies of distributing hardcore pornography to their hotel clients, and it provided a link to a list of X-rated movie titles.

Spokesmen for OnCommand and Liberty Media declined to comment on the ad, and LodgeNet's spokeswoman did not return calls seeking comment. However, top spokespeople for two of the biggest hotel chains, Hilton and Marriott, defended the policies that make adult movies widely available at their affiliated hotels.

Both Kathy Shepard of Hilton and Roger Conner of Marriott said the bulk of their hotels are operated by franchise-holders who make their own decisions about in-room programming. They made clear, however, that their companies consider adult movies to be an acceptable option because they can be ignored or blocked out by guests not wishing to view them.

"Really ultraconservative groups try to target the hotels in their zest to eliminate porn," Shepard said. "In their zest to have their personal morals prevail, they're eliminating choice for others."

Conner said none of the programming offered by Marriott is illegal, and he depicted adult movies as a standard part of today's hotel business.

"In-room movies are a revenue stream," he said. "This is a business matter."

The leader of the campaign against in-room porn is Phil Burress, a self-described former porn addict who heads the Cincinnati-based Citizens for Community Values.

Burress and his allies have had some success regionally, pressuring about 15 Ohio and Kentucky hotels to stop offering adult movies. But he says a nationwide pressure campaign would be difficult because nearly all the big hotel chains have similar policies -- porn is available at some but not all of their affiliates.

Though unable to cite specific cases, Burress contended that the availability of in-room porn is making hotels more dangerous.

"As more and more of these (hardcore) titles become available, we're going to have sexual abuse cases coming out of the hotels," he said. "Hotels are just as dangerous as environments around strip joints and porn stores."

Burress said he was "cautiously optimistic" that Justice Department officials -- whom he and other anti-porn leaders confer with periodically -- would seriously consider investigating hotel-based pornography.

Justice Department spokesman Bryan Sierra said federal authorities are committed to toughening enforcement of obscenity laws, but he declined to comment on specific targets for investigations.

LodgeNet and OnCommand together provide in-room entertainment to more than 1.8 million hotel room in North America -- with customers that include Sheraton, Hilton, Holiday Inn, Ritz-Carlton, Hyatt, Marriott and Ramada.

The standard in-room packages offered by LodgeNet and OnCommand include adult movies, but they have tried to accommodate hotels preferring a no-porn alternative, according to Shannon Sedgwick Davis, executive director of an association of hotels which don't offer adult movies to guests.

One problem, she said, is that the big hotel chains often have negotiated bulk contracts with the video suppliers that include the adult movies and can be expensive to cancel.

This is great because it shows out the massive hypocrisy at work. It's excuseable to vend porn if you're a corporate hotel but not acceptable to consume porn if you are an ordinary citizen. It is excuseable to vend porn if you are a corporate hotel but not if you are a cable teevee porn channel. It is excuseable to vend porn if you are a corporate hotel but not if you are a porn production company. It is excuseable to vend porn if you are a corporate hotel but not if you are a porn actor. A corporation's right to make profit trumps every other single consideration -in effect the MORALITY OF MONEY is the ultimate highest value not the morality of 'civic (religious) deceny'. What's a politician to do, answer to their ultraconservative extremeist base or answer to the corporations that actually finance their being able to run for office? I also like the ultraconservatives branding the hotels and their individual patrons as creating a dangerous place populated by perverse citizens whose habits tangentially create crime. The corporate hotel as red light district. As has been said on these boards before, porn IS part of the community value system, just that it is part of the ECONOMIC value system. If it were not part of the mainstream value system it wouldn't be vended as a common amenity at thousands of upscale hotels. The average business traveler is a 'pervert'.
SHOCKING! SOME GOOD NEWS!!!!Women may buy the morning-after pill without a prescription - but only with proof they're 18 or older, federal health officials ruled Thursday, capping a contentious three-year effort to ease access to the emergency contraceptive.

This is great news. Am actually shocked the the FDA got this through... course its prob just more about those big pharacutical lobbyist $$$ in someones pockets but I do think this is a good direction.
I suspect you are right Anna about the pharma companies whispering in the back door of their congressional puppets. Even though it was Clinton and one other woman senator who stimied the Idiocracy's nominee for the head of the FDA from being confirmed until something was done about Plan B. It does feel like news of rare rationality.
Someone very close to me (my "Clark Kent") works for a big pharma. All the big pharmas have "government relations" departments set up solely to harrass and browbeat politicians into pushing legislation favorable to the pill-popping industry. Corporate payola basically, very stick-and-carrot with campaign contributions and putting a stop to little old ladies crossing the Canadian border to get cheaper meds. I could never do such a job and neither does my Clark but some of his colleagues are doing it right now as I type -- trust me! Still, I agree about the morning-after pill. I'm surprised it passed as well but it's definately for the best and a step in the right direction.
