“The mechanics of oppressing people is to pervert them to the extent that they become instruments of their own oppression”
-Kumasi

A one-woman show written and performed by 22 year-old actor, spoken word poet and first time playwright Dominique Fishback, “SUBVERTED” portrays the destruction of Black identity through the eyes of Eden. As Eden, who is considered the exception, goes outside of what she knows, she realizes that the promise of “equal opportunity” still, to this day, does not lend itself fairly to everyone. Scenes depicting Charlotte, a slave from the 19th century who is not content with these rights being denied to her, are juxtaposed with scenes of Eden, who watches as the people she loves most live blindly subverted by a history they were not present for. What happens between what is thought to be passed down and what is inherited? What happens when the mechanics of oppression by others become the instruments used to oppress oneself?
