Re: Tom Murrin AKA Alien Comic

Chi Chi ·
Thank you for starting this topic Hatches.. Tom Murrin / The Alien Comic was our own Lipstick Traces from the Dadaists, a direct line from the Cabaret Voltaire to the stages of 8 BC, LaMama, Jackie 60, PS 122 and everywhere that really mattered in between. If you knew Tom or had ever seen one of his performances, you will know what a loss this is. From the entire Jackie Factory family, deepest condolences to all of his many fans, family and friends.

Before ever knowing of Tom's contribution to performance art, I first met him as my neighbor when I lived on Ridge street with Faux Pas yeargo ago. Always smiling, always encouraging, always making the effort to support our fledgling careers. A wonderful man. Thru the years I learned of his performances and had a great conversation with Penny Arcade about him and what he gave to the downtown performance scene that soon travelled all across university campuses and was soon called "performance...

Alien Comic was a brand name decades before art marketeers and every aspiring stage denizen wanted to be one.For a long period of time it seemd you could not pick up a local publication with event listings and not find Tom there. That is the mark of a true creative resource, just his ubiquitessness, and it reflected the tremendous output of the fellow, the widespread respect he had built and the eagerness of the audience to want more and more. Also, now, it is like we have to remind...

I am quite stunned by the sudden passing of my Blacklips confrere, Todd, AKA Lulu. She was a true original-- drop-dead gorgeous in drag, with an impeccable comedic timing which she really honed during her Blacklips tenure-- not to mention her wig-styling & makeup skills... Really one of the best-- if not THE best. I can still recall, with a smile, her portrayal of the dissipated and jovial Queen Louise XI in both "The Red Shoes" and "Hunch" (Blacklips version of The Hunchback Of Notra...

In our Nightworld, there are two kinds of artists - those who labor over their own creations, and then those who add their talents to the creation of something larger than themselves. Todd was as brilliant as they come, but his art was in service to the collective, to the creation of club/art/style movements. That is why so many of you won't know his name, but you know his work. I'd like to point out his enormous contributions to the following over two decades - BoyBar (three of his Miss...

To set the record straight, I didn't even own a pair of chaps until the late '90's! But Dee Finley is indeed a happy Pyramid memory. She must've walked through those golden doors when she was 12. She was the first of all of us to have major tooth troubles. Now, thanks to Elizabeth Taylor, her smile is more perfect than it was that first day we laid eyes on her in 1982! And to think I owe my very presence at Jackie 60 to Dee (but that's another topic...) Joey Horatio, the Pyramid's amazing...

I had always wondered why Linda refused to synch. Thank you, Vulgar, for setting the record straight. Perhaps she should have chosen another version of the song to do. Or something by Nancy. (Sinatra, not Isla, Rose.) Though I have to admit, my version of "A Time For Us", segue-ing from Barbra to Tom Waits went over a little better. Instead of stunned silence, they screamed "Get Off The Stage!"

Great post Ms Royale!!! So many great points so well tended to. I really must say however...... I really do not see myself as a "Leader". I am a damn good entertainer, a big mouth, a passionate soul, a lot of things, but I do not pretend to be a leader, I am simply finding my way with the rest of the flock. This subject is always so polarizing, and we've tried to steer clear of it ... While all of it was going on, we were being good little students and getting our education at Ohio University in the middle of nowhere. Zazoo did go to Limelight and Club USA in '92 (or ˜93) and had a blast. The Little Professor bookstore on campus carried "Project X" but that was the extent of our knowledge of the scene in NYC. I'll bet Miss Manson based her look on Walt Paper. That' so what Walt was doing. Don't you find it weird that in the club scene, someone like that would almost never be straight, but when the ones who get famous usually are? Although Michael Bronski did not actually post his obit synopsis here, I'm wondering if it is serving some other purpose or wherever else it was submitted. His seeming objection to the tendency of the media and others to paint rosy post mortem pictures fails to take into account some prerequisites of the moment, including timing, the emotions of the bereaved, and the fact the person in question or under attack is no longer here to defend themselves. Most everyone will agree that it's nearly...

Actually I consider the Martyr Mantras album (which contains "Specialize in Lonliness" and other great songs) to be George's finest work to date. So prolific, emotionally giving and really featuring his voice in a unique way. And it's such a great record to hear in the background while snuggling in bed with someone special, the perfect pre- or post-coital soundtrack to have playing on your CD player in a darkened boudoir at 2 a.m.

A despicable election year trick, intended to drive a wedge between the queer community and our hetero neighbors. While depressing, this article is highly informative and I love the quoted reactions from DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe, the ACLU and others. And though the Democratic presidential candidates are not THAT much better, at least they are against a constitutional amendment and Kerry can boast that he voted against the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996.
