Awwwww David... I certainly don't ever want to lose touch with you again either. I am very eager to hear more stories. That post was perfect because I used to always joke at the time-- with Greer and Hapi in particular-- that we should put up a card table at Port Authority bus terminal, right next to where those blue robed nuns used to stand, to welcome America's children into our wicked web. Little did I know that Ms. Langkton actually was doing that. I have one of Greer's few...

Hi Bobby darling, Happy New World Disorder 2005! Apropos of fighting against the machine, I just saw the East Village Art Show at the Chelsea Museum -- so major! It could have been ten times bigger... Paintings that are so fervent and wild. David Wojnarowicz's "Death of American Spirituality" is one of the most terrifying paintings seen in a long time. Overarching the experience is the apocalyptic drone of Sonic Youth from the video room. Sue Coe's "Car Hookers" is incredible as is David...

What artist would not like to make a living doing what they love to do? I don't understand your contempt for those who are able to. If it makes you feel better, I do not believe that most of those painters are rich at this moment, but even if they were, this would not make them a bunch of whores. If they are now getting media attention and a place in history, that doesn't make them sell-outs. The Soho art scene was crowded then, and getting way too blue-chip and over-valued. The fact that a...

The "Only Money vs. Only No Money" thread here made me think of this... Odd that about 28 years ago I was having a very similar discussion one day in a loft on Mercer Street owned by a cocaine dealer friend of my brother's who had laundered his money by buying up a great deal of that neighborhood. Tom Wolfe's The Painted Word had come out the previous year and someone was playing a then-unreleased demo of a song by Joni Mitchell, composed as a response to Wolfe (The Boho Dance.) Naturally...

Thanks for the tip off S'tan. Reminds me of the Ho-Jo's in Times Square where a burger with a soda cost $25. This strip of the Bowery south of Astor Place to Houston is going to be the new Times Square South, with a boutique hotel recently opening, and still with a big selection of low end restaurants and shops to be bought out by developers. The crush of people on the sidewalk during the weekends is oppressive.

August 13 New Yorker magazine... in 'Talk of the Town,' an article about the Carnegie Hall apartments, several dozen apartments over the theatre. Featured is Josef Astor, the photographer, who has lived there for 22 years... amongst other artists living there 30-40-50 years.... everyone is getting thrown out.

Even Barnes & Noble can't afford the East Village anymore! The Astor Place location, where I confess to have bought a book and magazine or two over the years, is closing as of December, because the rent is too damn high -- even for grotesquely huge, bloated billion-dollar mega-corporation. I knew the Union Square branch was hugely successful, but I assumed Barnes and Noble was like McDonald's or Starbucks: one on every block, regardless of the balance sheet of each individual branch. I've been visiting this board often since I found out sunday night. I have a strange empty feeling and knowing others are sad about this I guess provides some comfort. Those lucky to know dean, whether it was for 2 months or 2 decades know how he just had a 'presence'. There are many things I will miss about him - the conversations, the humor, the blogs, the exchange of creative ideas, the performances, the inspiration, the fearlessness and gusto that he put out there daily. I will admit to having recently become a huge fan of Ms. Lemper's. Her rendition of the brilliant tanquero Astor Piazolla's La Ballada de Mi Muerto (The Song Of My Death) never fails to raise the hairs on the back of my neck. And, as I recall, her classic Weimar Republic I'm A Vamp could be heard frequently at Cabaret Magique last winter. I think she is one of the few performers I would like to see live... for some reason I never have.
