Hello fellow night crawlers...

After months of stagnation, we've finally updated our site: Club Creatures - http://w3.iac.net/~klutz

We've got new galleries up of our nights out at Cherry and Makeup in LA, Red Party in Columbus, OH. (pics with Tammy Faye included) and several weekends out in Chicago - A Fetish Ball, Pumpkinhead, Boy George at Circuit etc...

For those of you who don't know Zazoo and Satori and the Club Creatures site, it is a long-time fav of mine and has been listed on our club links for years now. Their party reports and links section is remarkable for scenes and cities all over the country.

Z and S, would love it if you give us a brief report on Chicago here in Elsewhere - especially clubs that might be of interest.

roll eyes cool
Hey smile

Thanks for the support Chi-Chi smile

Chicago has a LIVE club scene. A lot of variety. Many of the most interesting clubs are outside of the "Boy's Town" Halsted area. Don't restrict your club nights to this area.

Circuit pretty much has the corner-on-the-market as far as drag goes. Spin has a dirty little shower contest every week...

We pretty much stick to the spots with hopping dance floors... Here are some of our favorite clubs. There are so many more that we'll go to, if there is a special event. Many clubs have fetish/fashion shows, special guest DJs etc. etc.

But, these are ALWAYS reliable:

-- Berlin Our very favorite Chicago club. DJ Greg Haus plays impeccable sets on Fridays and Saturdays. This is a smaller club with a very diverse, colorful, pansexual crowd. The bartenders and staff are great. Drinks are tasty and get you there quick. Very Queen/Freak friendly. An all around good time. Ladies who love ladies, definitely check out Wednesday nights. Open till 3:30-4:30

-- Exit From what we understand, nothing like Exit in NYC. This is the place to go for your Goth/Industrial fix. In the town that birthed WAXTRAX and most of the associated bands, dark edgy dance music is often still king. Hard-ass dance tracks on Satudays provided by Billy. This is mostly a Het club, although most of the boys/grrls will keep you guessing. Not uncommon to see ladies in stilettos pushing each other against the chain link fence that surrounds the dance floor. Drinks are HUGE, plan to get your Absolut Cranberry in a pint glass. The staff is hit or miss, I think some figure you want the abuse. Plan on passing reliable tranny hookers on your way out, good for those that long for the good ol days in the meat packing district.Open till 4:30

-- Crobar Locals have a love-hate relationship with Crobar. Chicagos biggest and "hippest" club can at times be a blast, and can bore you to death on other nights. The crowd can often feel like they are going through the motions of having fun. Staff is REALLY inconsistent, sometimes you will be pulled out of line and comped if youve dressed, sometimes they look annoyed youve shown up. Bartenders are the same way. Box Boy Rich and the rest of the G.L.E.E. Club crowd do a great job of making Sunday nights fun. DJs Terri Bristol and Psychobitch keep the music bumpin. Expect the crowd to be mostly shirtless guys 50% of whom will be friendly (if their rolls are good.) Also, a warning: Holiday weekends are MOBBED. and they up the price of drinks, cover and coat check. Open till 3:30

-- Red Dog Do not go to this club other than on Monday nights for "Boom Boom Room" This is one of the hottest nights in the city. Our good friends Jojo and Silky Jumbo are your hosts. Crowd is colorful, diverse and there for fun. Expect to run into artists, musicians and clubkids. Bangin house beats with DJ Lego. Drinks are tasty and strong. Open till 3:00

Chicago also has large Fetish Balls twice a year. these are always worth going to if you are in town that weekend.

We can also post some reviews of our favorite shopping, galleries and eats if people are interested...

We have links to many of the clubs mentioned above in our "links" section of our page: http://w3.iac.net/~klutz

hi sat and zaz...

i KNEW it would be mere hours before the names of such fierce rulers as jojo and silky hit the chicago board. they have blown me away time and time again with their INCREDIBLE costume creations. i instantly put you into their class when i saw your page.

i know them from faerieland - short mt., tennessee. they are legends.
tell them texxx said "hel-LO!"

would love to play dress up with you sometime. somehow, i think it will happen.

big, big love,

Hi Michael smile

Faerieland - short mt., tennessee. - yes, we've seen some of the pictures smile

Mud, pearls and glamour! Jojo has asked us to go this year. Around May Day right? We think it sounds like too much fun!!! Maybe we'll see you there?

Jojo will have his own web page up soon http://jojochicago.com/ He and Silky are still doing their puppet shows and performances with the Radical Faeries, and Jojo is creating some of the most beautiful dolls he's ever done. He is in the process of making a 13' tall Silky Jumbo doll!!

He's got a couple studios on the 3rd floor of the Flat Iron building in Wicker Park.

We'll certainly tell him you send him greetings and salutations smile

JoJo is one of the most amazing creatures I've ever met. Used to see that genius all the time while working at Berlin, across the street from the salon JoJo works in. One of the first times I did drag, JoJo did my makeup and I've never looked nearly as good. The child is talent personified.

JoJo's dolls are the tuff of legend around Chicago; I can't wait to see the website.

MS
I so wanted to go to Berlin, when we (Debbie and Fishsticks) were performing there last month we passed by it in the limo....It looked so cute. But alas we ended up at Circut (not much to say) we were only there for the night so I didn't get to go...but mabey next time. If I knew Minerva had once worked there I would have made more of an effort after the show.

Hi Minerva smile

Jojo does have a small page here: http://www.geniusinsanity.com/talent/jojo/jojo.htm

You can see several of his dolls there. His full page should be up in the next month or so.

He does sell them out of his studio. They are fully articulate, and can stand on their own. He was the only student of the late great Greer Lankton... He does window displays for Berlin from time to time, mostly around the holidays.

His make-up skills really are outstanding. I have to agree, the time he did my make-up was the best I've ever looked smile

Chicago Shopping

Downtown Area does not offer much more than you can find in your local mall. We do always hit FAO Schwartz and Virgin while we are in town.

Halsted Area There is some good shopping on Clarke and on Halsted near the Belmont intersection. certainly check out Medusas Circle for trashy rock looks and excellent accessories. 99th Floor, Beatniks, and Flashy Trash are also worth checking out. Beatniks in particular is a must for Diva Drag Queens. They have wig room and a large selection of Glamazon sized dresses. If you've got an itch to be a Vegas showgirl they have your feathers. Directly across from Berlin on Belmont is Belmont Army Navy Surplus, the name is misleading because they do have a wide array of clothes and shoes. If you want a cute little skater look, theyve got it, but they do also have that silver heat resistant spacesuit that youve been looking for. The whole area is a bit like a mini (very mini) East Village

Wicker Park rather quickly becoming too expensive for many of the great shops, restaurants and galleries that call it home. The current Real World loft was shot here, so that is a contributing factor. However, wandering up and down Western, Damien and North streets will still yield great treasures. The Flat Iron Building is right at the main intersection. This is an artist community. On the first Friday of every month, all the studios are open. Very much worth a visit. Eats are great in this area... more on that later. When we finally land jobs in Chi-town, this is the place we plan on calling home.

If you are into rubber, you simply MUST set up a time to visit our friend Geoffrey Mac's studio/shop. His site is here: http://www.geoffreymac.com/ his designs are amazing. One of his fabric pieces just appeared in April's Paper Magazine, on Michael Musto.

As a former Chicago slumdweller and Playboy centerfold shopper's assistant, I am so glad to see this topic unfold. If only we had had it when we went to do DCI in 2000, could have had heaps more fun!

Did go to an incredible all-Latin tranny night upstairs from a Chinese restaurant. It was Sunday night and the MC was named "Miss Kitty" or something like that that. The girls were AMAZING. Does this sound familiar?
Miss U's post above reminded me of a hilarious moment I had in Chicago in 2000. I had arrived a few days early to do casting for the runway show of our Downtown Costume Institute there. Quentin (our fun-loving sponsor/chaperone) explained that the owner of the club (which I think was in Old Town) was "Chicago's Chi Chi Valenti."

I was very eager to meet my doppleganger, who certainly was blonde, warm and hostessly. I can't remember her name, but I do remember that she had worked for Peter Gatien when he first brought Limelight there.
She didn't really remind me that much of myself, but I got a kick out of the whole idea.

Hey:)

All those interested in Chi-town... Our next trip up will be April 19th-21st (unless we get interviews up there even before then)

Friday the 19th there is a chance that we'll be hosting at Berlin. (still in the works)

Saturday the 20th is a bit up in the air... a couple of options.

We've got tickets to see Siouxsie and the Banshees at the Vic Sunday the 21st. Has anybody heard about this tour? Can't seem to find any information anywhere on how it came-to-be.

Anyhow, if anybody is in Chicago that weekend we'd love to see you out.

hey club creatures-

Enjoyed your Chicago tips VERY much and other Midwest city information is also welcome as I sometimes hit Cleveland and even Cincinnati on business. Your site is faboo too.

To answer your question, although ten years ago you might have found NYers travelling to go to a Susanne Barch party, I doubt whether anyone from here would be going to something of hers now.

For quite a few years her events here have become fewer and much more corporate, mainstream and chelsea queen. She did a party recently in NY and it was barely mentioned on the boards, which i thought was insteresting. .. . ..perhaps her crowd isn't online? Hard to believe, especially with a computer iscreenshot on her invite.

Thanks for the feedback and the info Pretty.

It seems few events are as loud and proud as they used to be frown

We've found out a bit more information about this event on the 5th, and will be attending. So if anybody else is going, drop us a line.

At the same venue on the 14th, will be a party showcasing images captured by George St. George Chicago scene photographer for "Boi" magazine (among others) This could be of interest to anyone there that weekend.

You can see some of George's work here: http://www.snapsaint.com/

I will probably go to the event in chicago in april for suzanne barsch. I thought something happened to her parties, the last one i went to was her 2000 halloween party at the roxy. There was not a crowd outside and the decor was very modest to say the least. Since chicago is close i will go to see what's happening. We'll have to meet up and make the party.
Hey smile

Just got back from Chicago. The party at "Le Passage" was plenty happening and much fun.

Winding down, and unpacking, but I'll give a full review soon.

We took plenty of pictures also. I'll try to get them online this week.

Some of the NYC people present: Susanne Bartsch (of course) Amanda Lepore, Richie Rich, Iggy and *BOB*.

This event is going to happen every first Friday of the month. It is already getting a reputation as a good time, so expect to be hearing about it.

thanks for the nice note. wish we had made it to Global 33 a bit earlier, as it was nice meeting some of the people there. I had such a great time running around NYC for 4 nights. what a place! me and Karen will be wandering the streets again over the memorial day weekend. i can't wait!
Darla,

I'm sorry. That was not meant to be a personal attack. I was thrown by the David Lee Roth + Dee Snyder + Martha Raye composite.

David Lee Roth + Dee Snyder was too much for me smile
Martha Raye could offer a great deal of temperance to the combo.

I really did not mean to offend you especially if this is a self proclaimed or otherwise equally embraced composite.

Thank you for keeping your sense of humor.

Well, then I had to go figure out who Dee Snyder is. She seems to be quite a busy person!

Martha Raye is the dominant member of the triad. Thanks for explaining the reference was to the interesting and seemingly incongruent mix of ingredients. Only Miss Understood! No apology necessary, but it is appreciated. If I didn't take a hit once in a while, it would mean I'm not doing my job!

Darla is sooooo controversial, and as you can see she has some detractors here on the boards. However, she has just as many fans, if not more. Darla is, as mutual friends have put it, the rarest of the rare. It is progress when there are so many more transgendered people about that one, in all of the thousands we have met and intercated with, should have extreme right-wing views.

I disagree with Darla on just about everything, politically, yet she is one of my favorite Motherboarders to read - netiquette flawless, links to backup articles and references, cool in the face of flames, etc.

Anyway, this has nothing to do with the price of feather boas in Chicago! I'll do my planned post below this... eek eek
I spoke to Susanne yesterday and she was saying how great the crowd in Chicago is. She said that the chicago crowd has the energy of the old Copa, which make it so much fun. I'm sure she was referring to you Z and S ! We're pointing her towards this topic, and your pictures, she hasn't seen it yet. razz

Chi Chi,

We'd love to take credit for the energy in the Chicago crowd that night, but I think we may have only been one additive smile

The crowd in general was VERY friendly and clearly there to have fun, mingle and dance. We just went with the flow.

Thanks for pointing Ms. Bartsch our way smile

We are unfortunately not going to be able to make this month's party at "Le Passage" in Chicago, as we just went up a couple of weeks ago, and are now budget constrained. frown

We thoroughly encourage anyone who has the opportunity to go and go-go.

We are planning on making the June party for sure.

It's a mutual admiration society, Darling!!! You are truly responsible for my rich and varied new life here in New York! Some responsibility, eh?

I'll let you in a dirty little secret. If the majority of people on the boards were right wing, I'd be espousing the opposing viewpoint with vigor and chutzpah. "Never cling to any one identity", the fortune cookie said. Or viewpoint, for that matter. It really is all relative, and every action has a good and a bad effect. The paradox keeps it all very interesting!

Big Snog!

susane Bartch's party at Le Passage was friday, May 3rd. i tried to say a few words about it in this topic, but managed to start a brand new topic instead. daddy was being nice (thanks daddy!) and posted a note for me here. the note is a few days old at this point, hence the "last night" confusion.

susane's May 3rd party was a great time. The theme was "jungle". lots of plastic blow up monkeys, grass skirts, chiquita bananas, and a seamstress who was stitching and stuffing banana-shaped things all night. me and karen arrived just after midnight, and the place was filling up fast. it seemed like a big chunk of the crowd left around 2-ish, but lots were there till 4 am. it was my first bartsch party, and i must say, she draws an interesting mix of people. i thought the next Le Passage gig was on June 7th, a first friday of the month event, but i have not checked into it.

Well, yes, I was in Chicago this weekend for IML. Suffice it to say that the Hyatt was a corporate nightmare; I was unable to post because the "Business Center" was closed for the holiday weekend. I actually participated very little in IML activities (except for a party with 7 German skinheads in my room, but that is probably another topic), so let me record my impressions of The Windy City...
I haven't been to Chicago for any length of time since the 1970's, except for a quick DCI Tour, so I was totally taken aback by the changes... The city now has the appearance of a set out of Brazil. I stayed in the new and refurbished East Side, all poured concrete and steel and glass, with strange gardens that were empty due to the holiday. On the plazas were gangs of skateboarders being chased by building security... Perhaps someone could explain the plethora of double antennae on the tops of many buildings. They do resemble horns. Perhaps they are a tribute to the cows that once passed through the stockyards. Or maybe something more dark and sinister...
I did venture, of course, to some of the more ruined sections of town and also visited the museum because I had never seen Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" up close. Was surprised by the Kandinsky's there. Who knew?
And who invented the gawd-awful term Chicagoland? Sounds like a Daley-ism to me.
I will probably return later in the summer and will want to see some of Chicago's night life. And I won't be staying at the Hyatt.

If we aren't staying with friends, our first choice of places to stay are always at the Neighborhood Inns of Chicago.

This is a triad of smaller Inns owned by the same people. All three are located just north of the city. If you stay at City Suites, you are right across from Berlin and right next to the EL. So downtown is just $1.50 train ride away.

If you are going up for a big area event (like IML) book at least 2 months in advance to get their regular rates.

The times we went to NYC we stayed in the Chelsea Pines Inn on 14th... These very much remind us of it. (except every room does have it's own bathroom)

Here is their website: http://www.cityinns.com/

Well our weekend in Chi-town was really good and really bad...

On Friday night we witnessed gang gunplay, complete with an SUV battering it's way through a Caddie.
This was on the corner of North Milwaukee and Western.

On Saturday I was assulted on our way out to Le Passage. (I'm fine, I got worse injuries from the 13 year-olds I used to work with in Social Work.)

Two guys ran across two busy streets to come up and throw a drink at my head. When they missed, the one guy (who was smaller than me) came up and kicked me and yelled "fucking faggot" The other guy was about 6'3" and a skinhead (black boots - white laces) he looked like he was going to come in swinging, but didn't. Jojo ran to Red Dog (where he works) They got confused on who to follow, so they backed off.
It could have been a lot worse, but we got lucky. We did get Police assistance, and a report was filed, but they didn't catch the guys.

I wanted people to know to keep their eyes open. The cops said that it was really rare in that neighborhood and it really surprised them. Wicker Park is generally gay/freak friendly, but I guess that also attracts the bashers.

This is the third incident for us in the last month. Some of you know that we had bottles thown at us twice (on the corner of 14th and 8th no less) while up in NYC. (Once we were dressed and once we weren't.)

I guess I'm just posting this to remind people that as far as things have come, there are still too many assholes in the world.

Your friends would have loved the concert it was very '82 v.s.'02
--------------
We've updated our site to include pictures from last weekend in Chicago.

We saw Peaches, Chicks on Speed, W.I.T. and Tracy and The Plastics in concert and ran into Peaches, Larry Tee and W.I.T. out at Hollywood Grille. We got great pictures of their performances, and a few from the sidelines.

We've also started a "LiveJournal" that we update almost daily.

Trisha's party was wonderful, and I haven't seen so many people going ALL OUT since Wigstock. I took around 70 pictures there, dropping film off today.

Fireball extremely well done, amazing performances verging on Cirque du Soleil...

Look what a happy family we were:

On a low note, my car was broken into, overnight on Friday. They broke my window, crowbared my locked glove compartment, and stole the brand-new satellite radio that Zaz had just gotten me for my birthday. Frown

Here's hoping the crack rock that they got for it was rat poison.

*Sigh*

This is an inquiry to denizens of the Chicago area. It looks like I am going to be in a suburb (Begins with Rose...) of Chicago on business for an extended period of time.

Where should I get a place to live? I'll be supporting two residences, so not too pricy please.

How about gay roommate services?

Thanks for any info!!!!

Darla, no one's gotten back to you? Hmm.. If we were moving we'd probably look in the Wicker Park area. The areas around "Boys Town" tend to get expensive for what you get. Greg/Matt/Chet live near Wrigley Field. They've got a very nice place in a row house. It seems like you get more space in that area.

Gigi, what is that area that you live in called? I would guess the places there are nice, yet affordable.

I'm so sorry I didn't get back to you - I read your post- but I've just been really busy, so let me offer some help now: I live in Roscoe Village( here's a link about the 'hood -
http://www.roscoe-village.org/ )
which is nice, safe, mixed rich yuppie/ middle class( straight singles, famlies, gay singles/couples) and about 10 minutes from "Boy's town"which is Lakeveiw ( our largest Gay community) the nice thing about my area though is that it is about 10 minutes from EVERYTHING and close to all public transport/highways and it is no where nearly as congested, dirty or crowded. If you could tell me your price range and what you are looking for, and for how long you will be needing a space ,I could help you out a little more. But if you are interested, I have a second floor to my house that I'll be clearing out- the larger room is completely renovated,we just need to put the carpet down, and repaint it,(we are actually going to repaint all of the rooms) it has a large closet, full kitchen,2 baths, the rest of the house is still being redone. The bus stops right in front of my house and cabs are abundant, parking is good also in case you're renting a car and there are stores all in walking distantance. There is a great park down the street, and cool little shops and cute restaurants one block over. The apartment is not a not a beauty-but it's cute- because it is still being worked on,I'm not gonna lie to you and tell you it's perfect. But you would have the whole upstairs house to yourself, and it will cheaper than what places go for in the area, and Lakeveiw. The only thing is my husband is a doctor and I have twins so for the most part, during the weekdays- we keep "domestic" hours. Talk to me- Gigi

This is an easy cheap way to get to Philly, DC, or Boston. Chinatown is full of incredibly cheap busses that run back and forth to both, and the Philly ones run all day long... and it's a shockingly low $10 round trip.

The one I took is called "Dragon". You don't reserve, just show up at the East Broadway Mall on East Broadway in Chinatown under the Manhattan Bridge. There are ticket desks all around the outside of the building. Maybe you should stop by one day and pick up a schedule. It's a fun neighborhood to check out anway. Just head down Bowery until you hit E. Broadway (it's sorta near Canal), hang a left, and walk a few blocks until you're under the bridge.

Hey Darla,

Zaz and I are back in Cincy until our trip to NYC May 23-30th and then we're in Chicago just for the 31st (Nina Hagen @ Double Door)

But then I'll probably be up in Chicago again for work on for two days the week of June 8th. I'm trying to swing it so I'm there on the 12th and 13th so I can just stay for the weekend.

Zaz will be in Vancouver from June 11th-July 1st for work...

Jojo and Gigi are always in town though Smile

Glad you liked the picture, at least I could still point and shoot.

How's it going in Chicago-I usually try to meet the people that visit Chgo from the motherboards, but I've been knocked on my ass by a horrible cough and cold that has keep me inside my house and stoned on thera-flu. It's unfortunate though,Schuba's is right in my neighborhood, well I'm sure your shows were kick-ass and I hope that you were treated well. By the way- I love the pic of you in the cheerleader outfit(from your website).
