Re: Miss Understood's Hi from Thailand
Well, I finally caught some dirt on Monks. I'm in Chiang Mai, the second largest city, much cleaner than Bangkok, in the North of Thailand. Fifteen minutes one way you're in farm country. Fifteen minutes the other way your in the mountains. I hooked up with this really sweet guy who's been driving me all around on his motorcycle. So he was a temporary monk for much longer than normal because he was orphaned at 9. His uncle was a monk so he went to live with them. I asked if they got nasty in...

Re: BURNING MAN
I'm still spinning from the 10,000 miles I must have traveled in the last 24 hours. So I thought I would try to express some of the strange visions in my head. After driving a van for 10 hours straight, through the desert, buzzing on double shots of espresso and listening to bad radio so as not to drive off the road and into the abyss of darkness, I finally arrived in LA at 3 am. Took a plane at 3 pm and now I'm back in NYC. I'm sure Goblin will have many posts soon, but I thought I would...

Re: Burlesque Queen MISS KELLY WEBB Loses Everything in Tragic Thanksgiving Fire- PLEASE READ
Hi all, this was such devastating news. Got a call from Rose Wood earlier who told us that donations of clothes/supplies for Kelly can also be left at The Chelsea Hotel c/o Room 724. Donations will be collected from there and brought out by cab as they accumulate. Please do not leave cash in that manner (bring it instead to the above club locations) but clothing, costumes, etc. She has absolutely nothing, so almost anything would help. Kelly is on the small side I would think no bigger than...

Re: 57 Varieties ( Club 57 Remembered)
Like so many things from those days. It was WAY ahead of its time. People sitting on the floor watching Monster Movies like Ed Wood Clasics and bad Japanese gems. Everyone would be screaming out jokes. Of course years later it became a TV show. "Mystery Science Theater 2000" (or something like that). A very funny show by the way.

Re: JC Leroy (as Terence put it)
.... was like running through a crumbling haunted house, each room more horrifying than the last. And you never know when one of the wood floor planks would give way, dropping you into a bottomless abyss from which you'd NEVER, EVER ESCAPE!!!!!!!!!!! Surely that bitch mother of his should be in jail, and I so badly wanted to and would slap the shit out of her (and I don't care if she's a woman). Who could guess with a casual glance at the trailer from outside what wretchedness burns inside.

Re: Grey Gardens At Irving Plaza
Well, you beat me to the punch, as usual Daddy! However, I cannot really take credit for the name. When Daddy and I were discussing the club's concept, having just visited Irving and seen what it was-- a crumbling, dusty former burlesque house (this was before renovations)-- the conversation went something like this: Hatches: I see it as a cross between an Edward Hopper painting... you know the ones he did of his wife stripping onstage in the ruined theatre... and a huge crumbling Southern...

The Gershwin still has some quite reasonable rates. I checked in there for two nights last summer during the 100+ degree heatwave (I had no air conditioning at home). I got an adorable little room with wood flooring, a little wood writing desk, the bed was perfectly comfy, and the bathroom had the old white tiling with an occasional black one dotting the walls. It was $65 per night during the week. I always think of Gershwin as Chelsea's wallflowery little sister.

This is precisely what Miss Webb was reporting on today after a horrid experience last night at The Box. She went to see Rose Wood perform, yet came away from the whole experience depressed and enraged. Squeezed in with wall-to-wall portfoliophiles and the women who love them; all screeching at the "freaks" on stage ("Oooooh, look! It always was those that came without them, or that expected NYC to be just like home that wound up running back from whence they came, tail between legs... I don't think we oldtimers really think New York has lost its charm. It is just that, for most of our time here, New York City seemed impervious to the changes and misguided trends that were so popular in the rest of the country. Don't...
