Re: RIP, VIP

Michael's lover Gareth sent me a note that Michael died last night between 8-9PM, at Saint Vincent's of complications due to HIV/AIDS which he had been fighting bravely for years. Gareth shut off his med tubes at 8PM because Michael loved curtain time. I'm sure many of you remember the pierced and tattooed very handsome couple, Michael and Gareth who frequented Jackie 60, Click & Drag and recently Cheez Whiz. Michael was an actor/songwriter. He was one of the girls in "Cage" on Broadway...

Her black mass tribute to the Aids departed at Saint John's Cathedral was one of the most extraordinary live performances I've ever witnessed even surpassing Led Zepplin at NY Pavilion Flushing Meadows World's Fair. The acoustics and spatial setting amplified the experience ten fold sending you right to the upper stratospheres of sensory extremes. Sarah was great. I guess my experience differs from others in that I read The Heart is Deceitful first, then Sarah. So I got the back story before getting the main story. But for me after reading Heart, Sarah seemed almost like a comedy by comparison. Of course the characters are again reprehensible and really disgusting (the child molester with pictures of little girls all over walls, mumbling about his stepdaughter? yeeesh -- and that atrocious Le Loup!) but the work in general was so much...

Though I liked a lot of the art at the New Museum show it was not actually about the art. As much as I liked the kooky dancing bee video for its low-budget, tres gay, faux MTV production value, Klaus Noami's video (with sound so lamentably under-amped), the Jack Smith AMAZING 1962 film -the show is about the scene and the people and not really about the art at all! Not too subtle about that either, since the whole upstairs gallery is devoted to 'class' pictures and headshots of the...

Eek, looks like Baby Jane...but yes, going back to Moonshadow, it was the happening place to go for a while back in the day. I remember it was run by two lesbians and yes, it did not open till 11:00 PM and only on weekends. On Sundays they had tea dances to take in all the twisted sisters left over from The Saint, which was actually the best time to go...a fun and(very)demented club.

I prefer my riverdance to be classified as an "elfin gavotte" actually! The weather was so perfect. The Saint Anne's parade was one of the largest, longest, and slowest moving versions of its incarnation ever, I'm told by oldtimers. The city's spirit was absolutely stellar. The Krewe York contingent got endless tribute by way of being a photographer-magnet and other revellers coming up close to scope the group out at length. Mr. Twist was highly popular, especially after the first several blocks when more than half his costume all of a sudden disappeared leaving...

The rest of our short stay in Istanbul was fascinating. We went to the Blue Mosque, outside of which there are Turks washing their feet in these stone sinks lined up all around the building. Afterward we roamed the Hippodrome, this lovely park between the Blue Mosque and the Saint Ayasofia, during one of the many prayer hours. We could hear the amplified sounds of the Islam singing and chanting echoing across the square. One building would sing, the other would respond, a whole call and ...

The St. Paddy's edition was quite choice with Ms. Martini doing the Saint right and Velocity's opening wringing a lot of exclamations from the crowd. A lot of the performances at Badass really blur the stodgy boundaries between burlesque, porn, BDSM and art, which to me is really refreshing to see. The results, a really different kind of pleasure, never leave me feeling like so much performance does -that I could have just stayed home and turned on a teevee to see some fluff. And there...

The Saint not have a heyday? How old are you partybobby? The Saint was located where the old Fillmore East was (Second Avenue between 6th & 7th Streets,) and is way up there in the pantheon of legendary gay nightclubs. Any other club that might have assumed the name since the 1980s is simply a thieving and unoriginal imposter. Except, of course, The Saint-At-Large which carries on its tradition and invented the concept of "Circuit Party." The Saint had a group of owners, most notably...
