Yes I remember here in the states, how the few Bowie fans that I encountered in the early days, round about '72 often espoused to being "bisexual." Unfortunately that didn't last very long, as everyone was beaten back into suppression, especially where I grew up in New Jersey. It was exciting none-the-less while it lasted, and brave.
