The New York City
Golden Festival
Jan. 18 & 19, 2013
Shaking up Brooklyn again!
An incredible grass roots event, New York’s only music and dance festival of its kind celebrates its 28th year this January. The Festival is hosted by Zlatne Uste Balkan Brass Band and features dozens of live bands playing on FOUR (!) stages, along with refreshments, arts vendors, and beautiful Balkan textiles on display. Simple line and circle dance instruction is included on Friday.
From international stars to local favorites, musicians from all over the world come to play and sing traditional and contemporary music from the Balkans, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Scandinavia and beyond. Dancing is encouraged. Bop to a brass band, chill to a quiet set of songs, bask in the luxurious setting of a restored local landmark.

"I heard some beautiful Bulgarian type singing from a trio called Black Sea Hotel.... Back down in the Grand Ballroom the act that pulled this whole festival together, the Zlatne Uste Brass Band was playing in the middle of the floor, as the dancers circled around them, like a massive swarm of bees." -- David Byrne
"gorgeously funky festival" "...nothing less than a grassroots folk rave. ...who wouldn't want to dance?" -- Richard Gehr (Village Voice and eMusic)
"After about 30 minutes of taking photos and getting some footage for my video, I couldn't help myself but want to join in." -- Mickela Mallozzi
