A collective that stormed the electronic music scene and conquered Ibiza in 2015 is now setting sail for Brooklyn. Do Not Sleep began as a residency conceptualized by management guild Electric Ibiza at Privilege, a club touted as the world’s biggest, and became an instant hit on the Spanish island’s hotly contested scene. Very quickly it grew into a worldwide phenomenon, functioning as a label, a radio show, and a series of roving house and techno blowouts with its sights set on our country’s shores for the first time ever.
Resident Darius Syrossian has been keeping the monthly Do Not Sleep radio show alive on Soundcloud as he jet-sets around the globe to play major fests like Pacha’s in Amsterdam and Sound Lovers in Italy. This year he released a whirlwind BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, a double-LP mix for for the Balance Music series, plus pressings of his original productions “Andranik” and “Mischief Brew”, tracks that quickly endeared themselves to the global electronic underground.
Syrossian will be bringing his superlative taste to bear on the decks, alongside a roster of some powerhouse locals. Chief among them is longtime innovator Kenny “Dope” Gonzalez, a genius on the dancefloor and one half of the legendary Masters At Work production team. The Brooklyn native started as a hip-hop block party DJ in the 80s, had his originals discovered by Todd Terry, and alongside Little “Louie” Vega created an astounding repertoire of original tracks. “Work”, a soulful, latin-inspired beat is one of the most sampled house tracks of all time.
London's Jozif, a Fabric staple and founder of the Fist Or Finger imprint, will be putting in a set, as will the back-to-back duo of Brooklyn underground heroes Shahar & Motum. Remove Hyphen (also known as Tanja), who has translated her training as a tabla drummer in the jungles of South India into a sophisticated understanding of dubby techno, opens up the night on an assertively rhythmic note.
