I remember the first and last time I took ecstasy. I was 17 and sleeping over at a friends house. A bunch of us were there and we all took turns choosing an album and dancing. My freind Claire put on Abba Gold and it was good. It was so good. I chose "Screamadelica" and listening and dancing was sheer ecstasy. Eventually the music ended and I became so sad that I began to cry - completely crushed. My friend Liz hugged me, whispering in my ear, "Don't be sad, it's a cassette, we have the whole other side to listen to." I will never be able to explain the sheer joy this realization caused me to experience. Sounds stupid but literally my happiest moment ever - I guess that's ecstasy and why I never took it again.
"Screamadelica" remains one of my favourite albums. I now have it on CD and when I play it I frequently use the repeat button as unlike a crocodile, Alligator Boy tears are very real.
And how much do we love their collaboration with Kate Moss, the "Some Velvet Morning" cover? It is so rich and has such a gorgeous trippy sound. As Jerri Blank would say, "It's a carnival of colors..." Of course she'd also go on to say, "all the grays, browns...and grays..." Still, it's a pretty number. DJing over the winter, I loved to mix it into Broadcast's "Before We Begin." All very 1968.
