Past contributors to Verbal Abuse Magazine, the literary zine published 1993-95, should be getting a very exciting piece of email soon.

After a twelve year hiatus from print, the magazine will publish its fifth issue in Summer 2007.

This is all due to the on-demand printing revolution discussed in another topic below.

If you were a contributor to a past issue and didnt receive email from me, please drop a line at verbalNO-SPAM@jackiefactory.com. I probably don't have your current address, and all of my addies from those days are gone so I havent gotten mail from you there either. (Obviously remove the NO hyphen SPAM before sending).

I am thrilled and overjoyed to be able to publish a print zine again, I thought those days were long over!

Congratulations!!!
Publishing it through Lulu.com so you don't have to shell out major cash, stack boxes of books, mail them out one by one... and you can track the demand as well.. I think this is a perfect time to get back to print!

I was thrilled to get the news and I will certainly be proud to be on the masthead again as Submission(s) Editor.
Bring on the slush-pile.

Love,
S'tan
Happiness!
Madge is coming to visit me for Easter with the b-friend. We are going to hunt for dinosaur eggs. Maybe you can entrust her with a slushy packet...?

The Goodies are trying to get me to come and do a Rapture thingie. I'd like to spend my rare plane ticket and see you too... come to party, etc... when do we project Issue Number 5?

You know FIVE is very special for us... Mother Oshun.
And Crowley affirms it's chaos, unstable, crazed... very good for the Arts, dear.
arabella-

We uncovered a small stash of issues in our storage - there are exactly 9 perfect issues of #3 and 19 perfect issues of #4 left. I will save you a number 4.

#2 is so out of print, thats the one I saw for $250 recently.

#1 is so, so out of print (only 1,000 were printed and the "paper plates" destroyed).

We are selling the remaining issues of #3 and 4 at the Rapture event tomorrow night, and then we will be out of all four issues. Hooray!

On to #5..

Oh, and tomorrow night's event, in case you missed it on our elists-

FRIDAY JUNE 1
THE VERBAL ABUSE RELAUNCH
with readings by TOM SPANBAUER and CHI CHI VALENTI
RAPTURE CAFE & BOOKS
200 AVENUE A (BETWEEN 12 & 13 STREETS)
8 PM - FREE ADMISSION

Literary magazine VERBAL ABUSE (Dispatches from the Nightclub Literati) was born at the seminal JACKIE 60 reading series in the early Nineties and published four issues from 1993-1995. Editrix CHI CHI VALENTI and Art Director JOHNNY DYNELL featured writers and artists with clubland ties new and old, including RICHARD HELL, EMILY XYZ, ALAN MACE (aka SISTER DIMENSION), MATTHEW BARNEY, MISTRESS ANGEL STERN and GENESIS P. ORRIDGE. Though the last of those issues were published twelve years ago, the zine has been a popular online destination for a decade now - SO popular that Valenti was inspired to bring it back in print in 2007. The theme of VERBAL ABUSE 5, due in bookstores this Fall, is "LOST CITIES".

The issue examines both cities that have disappeared and the districts within cities that have been lost to time, gentrification or catastrophe. One of these is New York's "Golden Age" East Village, and tonight VA5 contributor TOM SPANBAUER reads from his great East Village novel "IN THE CITY OF SHY HUNTERS" at this kickoff event for the new Verbal Abuse.

Portland, Orgeon-based Spanbauer, whose other novels include "NOW IS THE HOUR" and "THE MAN WHO FELL IN LOVE WITH THE MOON" is in town for the LAMBDA LITERARY AWARDS (he's nominated for Best Gay Fiction for "Now is the Hour".) He is joined for this reading by VERBAL ABUSE editrix Valenti, who performs spoken word pieces set to music, including the 1990 clubland classic "TAKE BACK THE NIGHT".

A limited number of the rare print issues of Verbal Abuse #3 and #4 will be on sale at the event to benefit the new effort. In addition, Spanbauer's novels will be on sale, and the legendary author will be signing copies after his half-hour reading. Host venue RAPTURE CAFE & BOOKS is the perfect setting for this relaunch, and their new Liquor License will assure an even more festive night - come out and enjoy a vodka with your prose poem!

VERBAL ABUSE 5: LOST CITIES will arrive in Fall 2007. Contributors include Spanbauer, Michael Musto, Scott Ewalt, (Submissions Editor) Terence Sellers, Dean Johnson, Brian Lantelme, Bobby Miller, Abby Ehmann, Paul Skiff, the late Marcel Princess Christian, Penny Arcade, (Editor at Large) Michael James O'Brien, Patty Powers and Rapture's own Brian Butterick.
I have to add that I am also amazed by the quality of our 'entries,' and I think this issue will be the best yet! What is fascinating as well is the breadth and depth of the work. Most writers did NOT take "Lost Cities" literally... but recognized it as a state of mind. Very cool.

It's thrilling that our cyber-format will enable so many more to read and enjoy. (Oh the olde days of boxes and boxes of books taking up expensive NYC real-estate.... over.) Many thanks to Chi for getting this together!

I also want to thank all our current contributors for being so agreeable about the Red Pencil! Most edifying... We know it is painful to be edited, but like the dentist you're happy to be beautiful when it's over. I am waiting for Chi to finish editing me, and I'm shaking in my boots.

Is it time for your "correction" already S'tan?
I'm sure you will need little fixing.

If it's anything like music (and I know that it is) the only people that produce (or edit) themselves are fools. Everyone needs another person who is outside of their head to give them a second look.
It's like when you are reading Anne Rice and she is rambling on for 40 pages about Lestat's big vampire toe you WISH she had a G.D. editor!

And I agree, this is going to be the best issue yet!
Yes Daddy I got corrected and what a lovely and rare occurrence it is, and at the hands of such a Goddess oh my. You're lucky to have her all to yourself! at times anyhow.

yea, Chi could edit the Rice Queen... the books would go from 600 pages to 150 and be better for it. Though she loves her very much!

I'm getting the last round for tweakage this week...including you, seven, so beware. No but really Chi said there is barely a period or even a space that is not well-considered in your work.

Thank you for saying I helped you be a better writer, Bobblinski! You blonde you.

Well after yesterday's marathon chat I am a little closer to my arrival date, coinciding with The Launch. Looks like middle October but let's not write it in stone.

(laughing) Reminds me of a poem by the vanished street poet Ken DiMaggio, something about how since we decended from apes we owe our whole literary instinct to them....but of course he got that point over by just shouting about how the world was invented by apes while he spoke their `language` rather loudly.
John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester (1657-1680) commissioned that portrait of himself... he was somewhat obsessed with the idea that men were simply apes with airs. Pre-Darwin, a most radical idea...

That period, the Restoration, is my favourite idee fixe as of late, as per "The Libertine"... the Earl played by J. Depp and the decadent King Charles II played by J. Malkovich, who is always gorgey in a periwig.

I saw it in the theatre and it didn't register and now I'm worshipping...

The Earl, original Verbal Abuser, actually wore such a device, common in the days of rampant syphilis.

J. Depp goes from utterly gorgeous to rotting and hideous, but still that genius pouring from every utterance.

Didn't you adore the theatre scene, when he comes back from exile - when the whole crowd starts chanting "Johnny said Cunt to the King! Johnny said Cunt to the King!"

[Rochester had to flee the court for several months after handing this to the King in mistake for another poem.]

A Satyre on Charles II

In th' isle of Britain, long since famous grown
For breeding the best cunts in Christendom,
There reigns, and oh! long may he reign and thrive,
The easiest King and best bred man alive.
Him no ambition moves to get reknown
Like the French fool, that wanders up and down
Starving his people, hazarding his crown.
Peace is his aim, his gentleness is such,
And love he loves, for he loves fucking much.
Nor are his high desires above his strength:
His scepter and his prick are of a length;
And she may sway the one who plays with th' other,
And make him little wiser than his brother.
Poor Prince! thy prick, like thy buffoons at court,
Will govern thee because it makes thee sport.
'Tis sure the sauciest prick that e'er did swive,
The proudest, peremptoriest prick alive.
Though safety, law, religion, life lay on 't,
'Twould break through all to make its way to cunt.
Restless he rolls about from whore to whore,
A merry monarch, scandalous and poor.
To Carwell, the most dear of all his dears,
The best relief of his declining years,
Oft he bewails his fortune, and her fate:
To love so well, and be beloved so late.
Yet his dull, graceless bollocks hang an arse.
This you'd believe, had I but time to tell ye
The pains it costs to poor, laborious Nelly,
Whilst she employs hands, fingers, mouth, and thighs,
Ere she can raise the member she enjoys.
All monarchs I hate, and the thrones they sit on,
From the hector of France to the cully of Britain.
