obviously, my all-time favorite film is "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory"....but when people ask me "why?" i respond with WHY!?!?!?! Eek Eek Big Grin

...i've never met a person that didn't like this film - for whatever reason..
...that is, until i went to a restaurant here in Ohio a few months back.
..i was wearing my "Wonka bar" shirt & a lady came up to me & asked "oh, you like Willy Wonka?", i replied "yes.....yes i do", with a big cookie grin on my face.
then, out of nowhere, she said "i never liked that film....it always scared me"...immediately, i mentally flash to the boat scene(which i will agree is very scary to a little child - at least back in the 70's), because if anyone says that this filmed scared them, it would have to be due to that single scene...although, i'm sure there are others.
truthfully, i gasped!

so, this film doesn't agree with everybody(what does?), but it agreed with me - & i'm quite sure the lot of you out there.

..& to think, there's been talks of a remake for the past 5 or more years now(please...oh PLEASE GOD, don't let 'em do it!!!). Eek

Willy Wonka is one of my favorite films too. The songs are not great, but otherwise it's flawless. Such a great, wonderful adventure and the casting of all the 5 kids was spot on. The wrong child actor as Charlie could easily have come across as irritating or dull given the sheer over-the-top charisma of the other kids playing the spoiled brats, but Charlie came across so understated and down to Earth, you almost want to cry at the end when he finally triumphs. Gene Wilder was genius. Re: the other kids, though Veruca Salt is the one every seems to remember the most, my personal fave was Violet Beauregard, the obnoxious-to-a-point daughter of the tacky used car salesman and the scene where she blows up into a giant blueberry and gets rolled out by the Oompa Lumpas. And the fast-paced, madcap feel to the whole film - gorge!
Willy is one of my favorite films. I own it as well as the fabulous soundtrack. I use their opening credit music sometimes for mood music for HIGH LIFE. Pure Imagination is sublime!!!! What a fabulous movie. When I was little in Michigan , 7 Eleven had Gobstoppers, and even though is tasted like nothing more than a layerd candy sweet tart, I would pretend it posessed all the great flavors the kids in the movie experienced. Willy Wonka RULES!!!! Big Grin
for those intrested, there's a book that came out late last year(around november/december) called "Pure Imagination" by Mel Stuart. it's the only recorded publication of the making of "Willy Wonka..".
...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

..& a bit of a tidbit: i just found out that Tim Burton will be directing the remake of "Willy Wonka..", so, it IS going to happen, unfortunately.
..i wonder if Marilyn Manson will still be on to play Willy? i'd figure if Burton's helming the project, then he might opt for a dark version of the film(which was originally proposed to begin with).

i'm so glad i found other "Wonkettes" out there. Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Big Grin I like the Chocolte factory too! I remember as a little girl I always wished to be there in WoNkAlAnD Eek Did you hear the man (I forgot his name) that made Edward Scissorhands & the Nightmare b 4 x-mas is making a remake of Wonka? Eek Big Grin
I just really hope they do good casting & not put these lame actors like J-ho & kidman etc.etc.
who'll play Willy? Eminem? lol Wink
Tiger, i refer you to my last post(right before yours), my friend. Wink
i would hope it's not Eminem!! Eek
...besides, this remake will more-than-likely be a darker-based version, so i can see Manson playing the role quite easily.

..i just wonder who's going to play Charlie Bucket & Granpa Bucket(& if they're going to have Charlie's father in this version.....for those who read the book, Charlie's father was working in a toothpaste factory, putting the caps on the tubes of toothpaste - if my memory serves me correctly - but when the movie adaptation was made, they nixed Charlie's father from the cast...they may do the same in the remake)?

In general I am not in favor of this movie being remade, but if a remake is in the works I think Tim Burton is the ideal director to do it. He has such a vivid imagination, and he could put his own whole twist on the story that us fans of the original might love. Edward Scissorhands was genius.

I agree that casting is key -- especially with the kids. The whole reason the original child actor playing Charlie was so effective was that he was sympathetic but not too "cutesy" in that annoying Olson twins way. Ditto for the other kids, they were so charasmatic and totally rotten to the core.
This was a fantastic movie ahead of its time, really well made... shouldn't be re done, even by tim burton..... Gene Wilder amazing... just a great story (Roahl Dahl was a genius)... it was so good cos it was disturbing and twisted, but had the juxtaposition of also being sweet with its 'moral' tale of being good and caring and kind... real interesting.... i hate it when there is a 'moral tale' but with this story i love it!

One personal tale... one year.... having a shitty day... it was haloween in NYC and i was not in the mood for any of it... i walk into my local deli and there were 3 blokes dressed as Ooompalumpas... but AMAZING costumes/make up... perfect... it cheered me up for the rest of the day!! good ole oompalumpas!

We were excited to hear that Marylin Manson was in line to play Willy, but now the official word is that Burton has cast his recurring star Johnny Depp in the lead role, who will probably do a better, if drastically different job overall than the former. I am only a little disappointed, as I bet that Manson and Burton would have come up with something tremendous for the riverboat scene.

Apparently Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston are executive producers...

well, in all actuality, Burton's film really isn't a remake of the original...in fact, it's an actual adaptation from Dahl's "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory"(which Burton's film will be titled as well).
...i feel Depp's the best person to play Wonka...but the original concept was to make the story much darker....in that case, Manson would've been the perfect Wonka.
...either way, i know they'll do a good enough job on it(though, still, Gene Wilder will ALWAYS be Willy Wonka. Wink

I have very mixed feelings about this movie being remade AT ALL. But if someone's gonna do it, Tim Burton is the best choice.

I'm also iffy on the choice of Johnny Depp as Wonka. He's just too pretty or something, even if he is a great actor. I think Marilyn Manson as Wonka would have been a bolder, more imaginative choice ... and definately taken things in a darker direction. Just the visual image of him interacting with children would put the production over the top. Marilyn Manson is already a real-life Wonka in a kind of ghoulish way.
i see what you're saying, Lex...& i agree with you.
...but i still feel this will suffice.

personally, i don't think the Dahl's wanted Manson as Wonka - nor the dark version of the story.
....also, something in the back of my FABULOUS mind tells me they opted for Depp(as well as Burton).
