Re: David Wojnarowicz - Artist

mr.joe ·
I, too, have been motivated, touched, and intrigued by Wojnarowicz. In 1994 ETC Magazine, for whom I was writing back home (in Atlanta) sent me to the Toronto International Film Festival on assignment to cover what was becoming a "smorgasboard of queer cinema." I remember sitting in the theater, around 4 in the afternoon, when Postcards from America was screened. That was one of the most pivotal moments of my 20's. I had never seen anything like it; I had never heard of David, was not...

I'm looking forward to reading that interview... and Glammy I really enjoyed our conversation pro & con JT the other night. I wish there were more negative opinions here, I really don't want to sound fatuous... But I haven't run across ANY negative reviews in re the prose yet. Just people hating the hype -- well who doesn't. Bobby, I finished "Running With Scissors" which you recommended as per a memoir of perverse childhood... God, what a gift your memory of Annie is! Putting out my request after stumbling across the Pyramid and Danceteria discussions, I don't think I realized what it would be like to actually read a post such as yours. It's wonderfully moving, to think of you thinking of her -- and your specific memories are like clues to recreating that fabulous and fractured time. Thank you! I DO remember her descriptions of Cafe Iguana, though I never caught a regular show. I know she thought of her job...

Ann's Brother ·
Dear friends, I am so delighted and moved to be hearing from you about my sister, Ann Craig! I'm scanning some photos from our mother's archives to share with you --- and perhaps shake loose more memories! I'll put them up before the week's out. Meantime, I just heard from Eleanor -- our mom, the author of "The Moon is Broken," her memoir about Annie (it's on Amazon) -- that someone took movies/video of some of Ann's peroformances at La Mama. She was doing skits that had originated at the...

Re: Bibliophile Part 2

romy and pilar ·
Sometimes I luck out and find something good in the pile of books that my super Rico puts out by the trash every so often. Recently he told me that an old lady who lived in one of the other buildings he works in had just died, and here were a lot of her books. She had all kinds of classics and generally good stuff, so that I felt sad that whoever she was, I had never met her and she lived somewhere in the neighborhood. It seemed by looking at the books and their price tags that the late 80s...

This article made us sad: Anne Rice comes to Jesus NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AP) -- It's Halloween, and Anne Rice has a new book -- a memoir, in fact -- that's climbing best-seller lists. Everything is normal, then. Anne Rice says she hopes to take her skills writing vampire books and "redeem myself." Normal if it were 1994 -- the height of Rice's megaselling fame as a queen of Southern Gothic pulp. For those who haven't been paying attention lately to vampire lit, America's most famous...

She is to American society now like what her tiny pooch is to her, and that is like what the dwarf court jester used to be to the royals. In fact the description of her character you quote Anna, really amounts to saying Paris Hilton is a developmental dwarf. Under the heat of her gargantuanly priviledged life and way too much media her personality never had a chance to be anything but stunted. As proof of this: her 'memoir' is being published this month - it is all of 129 pages long! At...

"Irving Klaw" just lent me a book entitled, "Practicalities" ("La Vie Materielle") by Marguerite Duras, one of the greatest, and most overlooked writers of the last century. The book is a kind of memoir, originally transcribed from tape recordings, and then edited and reworked into very short vignettes. Ms. Duras also wrote the script for Hiroshima, Mon Amour, one of the all-time great French New Wave films of the 1960's. I highly recommend both. Breathtaking.

Variety Magazine published an excerpt from famed screenwriter Joe Eszterhas's new bombshell tell-all memoirs about Hollywood. Quite a scathing portrait of L.A. and an ugly picture of Malibu too. When I think of Malibu I always see an incoherent Barbara Parkins in a Pucci caftan wallowing in the surf on dolls. Guess it's not really that fab.
