Re: I'm from normal parents (The Pyramid Club Topic)

Miss Understood ·
I first discovered Pyramid in late '87. My very first night happened to be a big benefit show, I think for Dee's teeth. Yeah, I know she didn't quite get them for a while, but that's another story. It was one of those super shows with a zillion acts! I was dazzled! In '87 the pyramid was all painted in crazy black and white trippy swirls, the shows were wild, and I was sold! It broke my heart when they painted it black. I became a regular at Hapi's party. It's what inspired me to do drag. I...

Re: BoyBar

Oh..Don't get me started. I did hair and Make up at both venues for both " houses". Mathhew gave me free reign on my work and Antony always had such great ideas. I learned a lot from both places. Boy Bar not only had cute fags but hot queens and the show always entertained. Pyramid/Black Lips productions either worked perfectly or were a beautiful hideous mess. Miss all that so much. Did hair and make up on many a budding star: Sweetie, Faux Pas, Mistress Formika, Sherry Vine, Floyde,...

Re: Dean Johnson - Death of a Legendary Legend

Chris C. ·
Nope, I didn't know him personally. I was audience. Back in the day when Whispers at the Pyramid was something I thought would never disappear; it was a new home. Nope, no talent here, never got on stage or did a damn thing. But then Dean started Rock and Roll Fag bar, and us "audience" types - generic shy gay punk types - had a place to listen to the music we liked. Never knew when the next one would be held, or where. But Dean somehow managed to put together a night for those of us who...

Re: Dean Johnson - Death of a Legendary Legend

Jacob R Clark ·
Thanks, Chris C for that nice post that brought back so many memories for me. Gosh, I loved Chrysis. Who could ever forget her? "Let There Be Peace, and Let It Begin with Me." I'll never forget being backstage at Pyramid during Whispers one night and meeting the DelRubio Triplets to get my album autographed. There was Chrysis in all her lame' glory, in full-blown costume change, telling the DelRubio's: "Hey, triplets, meet the twins!" Great lady, a legend. I'll never forget "Night of a 1000...

Zazoo and Satori ·
I attended a CUNY soiree a couple weeks back @ Stonewall commemorating the Anniversary. Some very, very touching speeches, including one by Michael Formika Jones a Poem of Bobby Miller's read by Merlin, and a tear-jerking performance by Sweetie. They were filming a documentary that evening, as part of a much larger Stonewall piece so we should be seeing it on film soon.

Re: Is New York over?

Minerva ·
I'm of several minds on the question, "Is NYC over?" The first is, yeah, a big club filled with interesting people is a lotta fun. But where have all the interesting people gone? I simply don't think that NYC has as many of them today as it did once upon a time. The younger generation is fraught with so much store-bought cool, and while there are some bona fide geniuses on the rise, the volume of genuine creativity and verve seems to have dwindled dramatically since the 80s, replaced by an...
