History Wrestles Commerce in Meatpacking District By DENNY LEE (NYT, 8/11/02) The three-year drive to confer landmark status on the meatpacking district is taking on a new urgency. What began as a low-key investigation of warehouses and blood-soaked Belgian blocks has quickened this summer into a race that pits preservationists against developers. "We're hitting a critical juncture," said Andrew Berman, executive director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. "Several...

Anna Nicole, Remarkably well done, such a vivid and "adult" image you drew in my head, I will have to draw it. I can't help but note how genius your ferret is, how well he works his way in and out of your story perfectly. The ferret is a very detailed and revealing manifestation of actuality ... while you and the boy are lost in hormone-addled states of imaginative anticipation and delirium, the ferret is vivid and real. Nothing is pristine, neither is it lurid. It just is, but spectacular...

When I was in 4th grade I used to draw swastikas on my books. I didn't really even know what they meant. It just felt "bad" and cool. I was so far removed from gas chambers and people suffering that it didn't really mean anything. (But it did get a reaction). It's like when people (like my wife) are obsessed with Jack The Ripper... I mean if you really knew Mary Kelly it would be different. (sorry Hattie, I know you knew her.) I think this Alig thing is a bit like that. I knew Angel. He was...

Fingers crossed all - CDs hopefully ready by Thurs/Fri if the live recording went well! Bettie Crow - You can still catch the magic! The exhibit is up until June 20th and there is now video of the show to watch on rotation at the gallery. My camera died during filming, so if anyone has some footage of the last five acts and, as it turns out, my own 2 mins. on stage, this is all I am missing in order to have the whole show documented. And I am hoping to hear from Selena soon for vid.

September 15, 2003 Tell Us, Doctor, What Is It About Models? By GUY TREBAY New York Times In 1953, Dr. Edmund Bergler, a New York psychoanalyst trained at the Freud Clinic in Vienna, focused his analytic intelligence on understanding that most sadly neglected field of human pursuits: fashion. The result was a book, "Fashion and the Unconscious," a matchless addition to the literature both of homophobia and of claptrap. Dr. Bergler was not the first to suggest that the will to hoax womankind...

SEPTEMBER 30--Madonna's new "Hollywood" video is a blatant visual rip-off of the work of a late French fashion photographer, according to a federal copyright lawsuit just filed against the pop superstar. The son of photographer Guy Bourdin alleges that Madonna's video is filled almost entirely with reenactments of his father's distinctively racy images (Bourdin died in 1991 at age 62). "It's one thing to draw inspiration; it's quite another to simply plagiarize the heart and soul of my...

Hatches can you draw a simple map of that railroad trestle? Well Anna, I agree the odds are a person here is more likely to meet their demise from any of a wide assortment of other more 'natural' ends. The orange alerts are really a throwback to the very war you talk about your mother experiencing. The two main motives are to enforce a kind of conformity of anticipation and enable the Little Bushies to take license to institute more marshall measures on the public at large. The actual effect...

But, yes, soooo many ACT UPers have gone to continue the work, most often with other groups, including direct action. Many were at the screening of the ACT UP oral history project last night. A few thoughts: I went to the preview the other night; I left there somewhat emotional, mostly because of the rather glaring absences of those who galvanized a movement during such heady times, what some would call the global shift in attitudes on HIV/AIDS, and the value of those who were most affected, namely gay men. There are many more interviews on the web site, yet some have "gone on with their lives" or passed away. The life-or-death urgency is no longer fashionable. My personal...
