Above the Trendy, the Down and Out By ALAN FEUER NY Times April 7, 2005 Knock at Room 18 on the fourth floor of 559 West 22nd Street and an old man in a watch cap stumbles to the door. "What am I doing here?" he asks, answering the question with a question. "I'm dying here," he says. His name is George Ullrich and, according to his own account, he has been dying here for almost 30 years. He lives in a small room, 10 feet deep by 10 feet wide, and in rooms all down the hallway, a piece of the...

Oh dear, the upstairs bathroom. I forgot about that. I remember swearing up and down to the hideous landlord that no one from Jackie 60 was using the bathrooms upstairs. Then he took me in one of the rooms... Trashed! Empty beer bottles, half empty cocktail glasses, used condoms, pieces of Jackie decor, Jackie invitations for the next week, empty tiny plastic bags, roaches, cigarette butts and a pair of pants stuffed down the bowl... Of course I stuck by my story. I said if these were our...

This is the Maya Deren story as much and as far I remember it... It was around the time that Deren was inundating herself in Voudoun culture and ritual-- she recorded two albums of ritual music, wrote a book on the subject and was shooting footage that would later be assembled into the film The Divine Horsemen . She was also supposedly inducted as a Voudoun priestess. She met Anger at a party and for whatever reason began to have a psychic battle of wills while standing in the kitchen, which...

My boyfriend started to read Anne Rice's new Jesus novel but put it down after 50 pages, disgusted. (he actually bought the book for me as a Christmas present but I haven't gotten to it yet). He declared the prose "simple and dull, dull, dull" and refused to waste anymore time on it when there are stacks of other books in our kitchen from his "To Read" list that are still unread. A tepid bore, according to him, and it's no accident that it's printed in giant font. Haven't picked it up myself...

The weather was so perfect. The Saint Anne's parade was one of the largest, longest, and slowest moving versions of its incarnation ever, I'm told by oldtimers. The city's spirit was absolutely stellar. The Krewe York contingent got endless tribute by way of being a photographer-magnet and other revellers coming up close to scope the group out at length. Mr. Twist was highly popular, especially after the first several blocks when more than half his costume all of a sudden disappeared leaving...

Great seeing all of you today. I applaud everyone who turned out. I too hope that this builds some momentum and we are not regulated to side streets during the next demonstration. Beware of Bigotry, Intolerance and Violence in the neighborhood."

I remember running over to the Lankton's house one day when I was home alone and had received a frightening prank call, and how caring and comforting Cathy and Greg were. When Greg became Greer, my fundamentalist family was shocked and horrified. I, however, was secretly amazed and thrilled for her courage. I had...
